A good lesson in not always judging a beer by the brewery....been looking at this one in my beer fridge with trepidation given my less than stellar experiences with RBBC and this doesn’t suck. Pours dark brown almost black with a very small white head. Chocolate, vanilla, and maple dominate the aroma. The smoke flavor is light, but keeps this from crossing into over sweet territory. A little of the bourbon character which goes so well with the flavor. Good beer, Hair6a11 (1481) - Illinois, USA - MAR 14, 2012
Bottle; pour is murky dark brown with a fine bubbled khaki head ; average retention, spotty lacing in this snifter. The nose is so muted; there are some chocolate, caramel malt notes..... and.... yeah. Thewade (340) - USA - MAR 6, 2012
The flavor profile is at first some bitterness from the hop profile, some chocolate malts; now if this beer was whiskey aged its nearly impossible to tell. As far as the smoked elements... super muted. This beer sucks, point blank.
Interesting beer...... smoothe and well balanced with definite vanilla notes. beergodd1 (401) - Conneaut, Ohio, USA - FEB 29, 2012
Pours a dark brown, almost black with a tan head. Nose is a smokey wood, spice, vanilla and dark roast coffee. As it warms the whiskey starts to show. Taste is a bit confusing. Initially the smokey oak with some vanilla sweetness and some dark roasted malts. I don’t really get too much whiskey but more caramel, chocolate and some coffee. And really not much vanilla. It definitely gets better as it really warms. This, like the Old Stock ale, has a dense foam all the way through to the end, which seems to make it creamy. This brewery is pretty good, this is the second I have tried, gonna have to trade for some more. nbondi (250) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 17, 2012
Dark brown with quickly dissipating tan head. Musty dark fruit nose reminiscent of many European stouts. Smokey, musty, dank. Taste is surprisingly bright as musty notes take a back seat. Some sour/acidity up front with lingering smoke. This gets more and more weird as it opens up. Dark notes almost totally replaced with sour fruit. Never got any vanilla...Quirky and clumsy from beginning to end. Not sure I’ll finish it.

12 oz. bottle from stevemastny- thanks again, Steve! Pours a dark, deep, mostly opaque coffee brown with a small tan head that leaves a lasting ring. Smokiness emerges from the aroma immediately, with notes of dark fruits, chocolate, vanilla, oak, and whiskey- pretty much what it advertises but something was just a wee bit off; maybe too much fruit? Is infection starting to set in? The flavor confirms that yes, something is off. There is a ton of tart fruit in complete opposition to a really nice woody, smoky note; some cocoa and bacon. So unfortunate. It’s not terrible and totally undrinkable, but it is in no way what was intended. Half of the flavor is fantastic but is torpedoed by the rest. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a smoky, tart mouthfeel. Both linger, too, so it’s insane on the palate. Damn. fluffy (2461) - St Petersburg, Florida, USA - FEB 5, 2012
oh, god this was awful. i usually love rauchbiers (like Z Lager, or the german ones i cant pronounce), but this was just heinous. a weird sweet/smoky flavor that was awfully unbalanced. maybe i got a bad bottle or something, as i would give this another chance. but this was a drain pour after one sip. pumpkin (28) - Apex, North Carolina, USA - FEB 3, 2012
12 oz bottle, pours brownish black color, tan head medium carbonation, smells of smoke chocolate and vanilla, taste of smoke, bourbon, then vanilla shows up at end. As beer warms kinda get a strange barrel taste. Just ok MrBunn (2849) - The Wet Side of a Dry Town, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 18, 2012
Bottle. Pours a dark brown with little head and aromas of grain silo and peat with a little vanilla. Flavor is discombobulated, to say the least. There is a tart edge to it at times, a bit of dustiness and vanilla and a fairly sweet brown sugar and maple syrup finish. It’s not awful, but not a beer I will ever try again. slang (654) - Columbia, South Carolina, USA - JAN 17, 2012
12 oz. Pours dark w/ tan head. Nose is ehh, funk. Taste is syrupy vanilla, and ashtray. Cheap shit. Not for me.
