Smells very smoky and has a nice smoky aftertaste. I was expecting it to have a noticeable vanilla flavor, but it didn’t. Pretty good, but I’m not sure I’ll buy again.

Aroma is SERIOUSLY smoky, like burnt green wood, with a hint of, yep, you guessed it, vanilla, and a touch of coffee. It pours a warm opaque sable with a thick, fluffy, persistent light tan head. Smoky flavor has vanilla, coffee and molasses notes to it. Firm-bodied texture is fairly fizzy and leaves a woody, smoky finish that has hints of coffee and yeast.

Heavy on the oak flavors, not on the vanilla flavors. Definite coffee flavorings on the head. Would be a solid porter offering if my expectations weren’t tainted to expect vanilla in the porter. It’s there, but extremely faint. Can’t quite cut through the barrel’s smokiness.

Black, small brown head fades leaving little residue. Aroma of chocolate, wood, light char, light tart berry. Taste doesn’t have the hot whiskey flavors that a lot of these beers do. I am having this after a Yazoo SUE and honestly I would rather drink another one of these than SUE. That’s hard to say since Yazoo in my local TN brewery, but it’s the truth. The texture is better than the SUE. The complexity is better than the SUE because of the whiskey addition. Great stuff.

12 ounce bottle - $2.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, near black body with a medium-sized, light beige head.

Smell: A sooty smokiness certainly leads the pack, followed by sweet-scented chocolate, sugar-dosed coffee, and some dark fruits, the vanilla bean pods, as well as the barrel treatment coming in dead last (but, better last than never, right?).

Taste: Sweetish malts, some semi-sweet chocolate, roast-accented coffee, and the expected vanilla, but, unless the previous iteration, with a noted chimney smokiness. Light bourbon character, no more, with caramelized sugar creme brulee tops. Sweetish, smoky finish with that barrel character trying to emerge, even at the last second, but not quite getting there.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Develops a smoothness as the carbonation dies away.

Overall: Sweetish, mellow, and smelling, at times, of smoke. A bit like myself, really.

12oz bottle shared by drowland, pours a very dark brown with a tannish head and some lacing through out the glass, the aroma had a hint of bourbon with a sweetness of vanilla, the flavor was pretty weak for a BA beer, the whiskey really doesn’t shine through all that much, slight chocolate flavor in the finish, really thin mouthfeel.

Bottle thanks to thome50. Poured dark brown almost black with a beige head. Aroma was bourbon, oak, chocolate, and bbq. Flavor was on par with the nose. Body was heavy with low carbonation.

12oz bottle from Liquor Loft. Black/brown pour with tan head. Aroma is sweet malts, oak and whiskey. Tastes are smoke, vanilla, dark fruit, ash, meaty, cocoa and coffee. Smoke is subtle (always good for me) and leaves a roasty bitterness. Not a smoke fan - but pretty decent.

This beer actually had way to much going on, and was not well balanced imo. The aroma was yeasty with smoke, earth and leaves. The color was black with a nice tan head. The taste was actually what I disliked about this beer. The "smoke" flavor completely overwhelmed the other flavors. I wouldn’t call it a smoke flavor as much as I would call it a harsh burned flavor, No vanilla flavor was noticed in the beer. Would not recommend.

Draft… This beer rocks!… Black ale with a small, fluffy, khaki head. Decent retention. The aroma is of milk chocolate and robust vanilla flanked by light hickory smoke and a touch of maple syrup. Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and medium carbonation. The flavor unveils toasted nuts, chocolate and vanilla. Pleasantly sweet, milk chocolate and vanilla finish. Very agreeable. World class stuff!
