3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Resinous grapefruit with a bit of a pungent, cattiness and pine. Color is dark copper with a thin-white head. Flavors similar to aroma, sweet with a good amount of hop flavor manifested as pine and a bit of citrus fruit of some sort. Flavor is hop-forward, but there is a lot of sweet caramel malt with some toasted bread. I like that the body isn’t too full,.. it’s a little thin but I think that’s a good thing in this beer. It’s flavorful but drinkable.
UPDATED: OCT 23, 2017 Pours clear and reddish with a light white head. Standard DIPA w/ slight grassy finish. Overall solid beer jb (3412) - Rochester, New York, USA - SEP 14, 2017
Seems a bit towards the EPA style. Lots of pine and caramel all around. Dark, clear amber, excellent lacing pattern, really attractive. Thanks for trade Ron. Voodoo (702) - Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 13, 2017
Pours an amber with an off white head which disappears quickly....aroma of fresh bread, citrus, slight melon.....taste is quite good, citrus, nice bitterness, just a tad light on the body and finishes with nice bittering. Andrew196 (1993) - Katy, Texas, USA - SEP 13, 2017
Pours a deep orange, sissy white head, non uniform with lace. Aroma of pine and citrus, perhaps honey. Medium carb, spice, light fruits and florals, more pine. Not bad. cmacklin (1306) - Lethbridge, Alberta, CANADA - SEP 5, 2017
355ml bottle. (6.1% ABV) Pours a slightly hazy orange with a medium, soapy, long lasting, off-white head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, orange, grapefruit and light pine. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, grapefruit and pine with a dry, mildly bitter, hoppy finish. Medium body with an oily texture and average carbonation. Simple but ok.

On tap at the Sun Room in the Lake Yellowstone Hotel. Pours a dark, bronze color, with a medium, beige head. The nose is rye, some strong pine sap, chalk, and mud. Not very sweet, with a sharp, biting bitter flavor. Medium body, thick, and grainy. This is a pretty nice IPA, but a little harsh and off. Could be better. nathanvc (712) - Brugge, BELGIUM - JUL 15, 2017
At Soda Butte Lodge Prospector Restaurant, Cooke City. Pours clear dark amber with a lasting, small, frothy, off-white head. Smells a bit off. The aroma contains hops, hay, grass, malt and some caramel. It tastes medium to light hoppy bitter, light malty sweet, with a light bitter finish and lingering maltiness. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. It’s like a combination of an IPA and an Amber Ale... vandc01 (442) - North Branch, USA - JUL 14, 2017
Not much for aroma - but definitely has some body and tastes good after a long day FaithRiver (1) - - JUL 4, 2017 does not count
I like this beer, and I love this brewery. Red Lodge is doing a solid job. I prefer this one served extra cold.

Taking a trip to Yellowstone Park gives me the opportunity to sample local brews. Bent Nail was bought as a single 12 oz bottle at a Billings establishment. I could not get it as cold as I would prefer but that is not going to stop me. Drinking out of the bottle restricts opinion on color and head. A smell gives a cascade hops grain and citrus reply. The taste is a light hoppiness, bread and a slow-ending bitterness. No world beater but fair enough.
