At Soda Butte Lodge Prospector Restaurant, Cooke City. Pours clear dark amber with a lasting, small, frothy, off-white head. Smells a bit off. The aroma contains hops, hay, grass, malt and some caramel. It tastes medium to light hoppy bitter, light malty sweet, with a light bitter finish and lingering maltiness. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. It’s like a combination of an IPA and an Amber Ale... vandc01 (414) - North Branch, USA - JUL 14, 2017
Not much for aroma - but definitely has some body and tastes good after a long day FaithRiver (1) - - JUL 4, 2017 does not count
I like this beer, and I love this brewery. Red Lodge is doing a solid job. I prefer this one served extra cold.

Taking a trip to Yellowstone Park gives me the opportunity to sample local brews. Bent Nail was bought as a single 12 oz bottle at a Billings establishment. I could not get it as cold as I would prefer but that is not going to stop me. Drinking out of the bottle restricts opinion on color and head. A smell gives a cascade hops grain and citrus reply. The taste is a light hoppiness, bread and a slow-ending bitterness. No world beater but fair enough. Gription79 (2891) - Bountiful, Utah, USA - OCT 19, 2016
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. There is a nice citrus, floral, pine nose. The flavor is showing oxidation, enough caramel maltiness to be detracting, toffee. Not bad.

Reviewed from notes, this was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a fairly transparent red color with a less than a finger’s worth of white foamy head. Dissipation is moderate and nice. Spotty lacing.
The aroma starts with some dried grapefruit rind-like hops and then gently flows in a caramel malt balance. Subtle grassy hop character gently infuses as it warms.
The flavor balances nicely between caramel malt and grapefruit rind bitterness. Well balanced malt to hops aftertaste strolls into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a clean semi-sweet to bitter sessionabililty about it. Carbonation feels good with some touch of prickliness from the bitter hop component.
Overall, for the most part, it’s a pretty good AIPA. I could see myself coming back to this. NachlamSie (3481) - Denver, Colorado, USA - AUG 27, 2016
Bottle at the one bar inside Bozeman Airport. This is a pretty clear amber with a good white head. The aroma immediately brings to mind a stronger SNPA. Solid grapefruity hops are noticed first with appropriate caramel malt balance. Perfect bitterness in the flavor with clean, but subdued hop character considering it’s an IPA. Finishes with juicy grapefruit notes. Not too shabby. DWestrick (758) - Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA - JUL 24, 2016
bottle at Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone. Might have been a bad batch - or expired - but this was pretty unimpressive IPA. jgb9348 (6250) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - JUL 17, 2016
Crisp clear light copper and honey coloured body with a nice and smallish two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of a lot of caramel, some earthy malt, a touch of grass, a little soap and a hint of floral and perfumey hops. Light-bodied; Strong grassy and herbal flavour up front with hardly any malt at all, some light sugars and very little else - a touch of hops. Aftertaste is pretty mellow as well with a little grassy herb flavour, some stale hops and a bit of grain. Overall, not such a great beer and definitely missing a few aspects to make this decent, but sadly, still nice for me to try given it’s a long way from home, and it’s a local beer, but if you can get this beer and others regularly, pass this one up, this isn’t worth your hard-earned money! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Vintage Sellers in Great Falls, Montana on 20-June-2016 for US$1,75 sampled at home in Washington on 16-July-2016. dagimp (1008) - Philly, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 9, 2016
On tap at Jake’s in Billings. Pours a nice copper color with a little head. Not much aroma but a little pine. Smooth mouthfeel. Taste is mainly light pine. Medium dankness with some lemon. Yeah, pretty solid IPA. Not great but solid. Easy to drink, I think I had three. Bitterness is medium to low.
