3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, 500ml. An amber colour with a medium head. A hoppy aroma with some fresh citrus notes. Flavour of roasted malt with a little barley, citrus hops and a little treacle providing a nice depth to the flavour. Alcohol fairly evident. A somewhat bitter finish. Not bad, but fairly run-of-the-mill.
Bottled, 500ml from Happy Apple in Totnes, Devon. Orange amber with white head. This proved to be quite a rich, malty beer, fruity, mid sweetness with a touch of alcohol dryness. There is a fruity hopped note, jammy orange notes then a hint of caramel. It's fine. ManVsBeer (11143) - Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, ENGLAND - JUN 17, 2016
Bottle from Sidmouth Wines, Sidmouth. Dark amber-red with an uncontrollable thick bubbly-frothy head. It’s a sweetened strong ale, with a bitterness apparent, but its mild fruitiness is a little more stated than this. fonefan (52351) - VestJylland, DENMARK - JUL 21, 2013

Bottle from West Country Ales. Sour mash nose with plenty of sweet malt and vineous figs coming through. Pours muddy with no head to speak of and quite lifeless in the glass. This lack of life continues into the mouthfeel in that it is almost entirely flat. Notes of malt come through but are displaced by a sourness from the bottle conditioning that isn’t to my taste. That said, it’s well-hopped and this balances well with the deeper than average malts. The finish has a bitter astringency that doesn’t repel but that cloying sourness is still there. It confuses me a bit. Complex, interesting, but with too much red in the ledger for it to be a good ale. I’ll keep an eye and if the community continue to side against me perhaps I’ll give it another try and pour it a bit more carefully ... ALLOVATE (3087) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - OCT 27, 2011
Almost bright, deep copper body, not much life evident. A flaccid, loose sudsy white head forms off the pour with nothing to replenish it. There is a hint of swampy marshland in the aroma, quite weedy, dank, musty, and herbal with a satisfying edge of caramelised oranges and warm, dark toffee. Bold malty, hoppy palate, assertively bitter nettle and weedy swallow, holds the alcohol well. Meaty body, smooth resinous hop finish, lots of pine, tangy orange marmalade and weeds throughout. Chewy biscuity malts give good balance adding a nice initial and residual sweetness, hints at a dark wood honey. Really nice drinking though at this strength it might be an early night. A solid strong bitter. (50cL, BBE 05/12, Dart’s Farm, Topsham, Exeter, Devon)
