COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask & keg; Occasional.

Produced from 3 US hops with 2 coloured malts this beer has the hop-forward profile of an IPA with the dark colour of a porter. Lemon and orange notes balanced hints of coffee and chocolate with a subtle toasted sweetness leading to a pleasantly dry finish.

Cask conditioned handpump Harp London 05/07/13. A near black beer with a whitish bubbly head. A hoppy blavk beer with some sweet roast and some chocolate. Good flavours but not hoppy enough or with the hop profile of a Black IPA really.

Cask at the Falcon, High Wycombe. Brown-black with a thick, creamy beige head. Smooth and chocolatey. There’s some piney notes but generally hop presence is a little low for a supposed black IPA. Quite a thick mouthfeel too which again contributes to it feeling more a porter. Overall, style issues apart it’s an alright beer.

Cask, The Salmon, Leicester. Mahogany with a cream head. Creamy dark chocolate with mellow pine and white grape. Nutty with cocoa powder and roast coffee bitterness. Underlying toffee with hints of grapefruit pith. Dry on the finish. Good.

Cask at Arvon Ale House, Llandrindod Wells. Pours black brown with a tan head. Down side, a little thin. The rest is a triumph, bitter roast, in your face hops, then some choc, bit of coffee. Superb.

Cask at The Earl Grey Inn, Leek. A deep brown colour with a thin off white head. Aroma of toasted malts, tobacco, red berries, a little orange, slight pine and some chocolate. Taste of toasted malts, some chocolate, pine, red berries, subtle orange, maybe a little grapefruit, slight herbal hops and some coffee bitterness. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. A bittersweet, roasted, fruity bitterness in the finish. Only slightly a black IPA, subtle herbal and citrus flavours and not a great deal of porter characteristics to this either. Drinkable though.

Half pint on tap at the Greyfriar in Reading. Doesn’t have much in the way of nice hop notes, and doesn’t cut it as a dark beer.

Draft - Sweet pine and a mellow dark roast. Deep maroon with a rich beige head. Pine and dark roast with a decent sweetness to mellow the bitterness. A bit of tweaking in the roast/pine and this would be remarkable.

Keg. Black, no real head at all. Aroma is copper pipe, caramel, floral. Body is medium, spritzy, quite foamy. Taste is smoke, chorizo, rose perfume. Decent overall.

Cask at Thornbury Castle, near Baker Street, London. Clear deep amber beer with a small bubbly head. Fruity grape aroma, pear, citrus, some licorice. Fruity grape flavor, licorice, apples, some citrus. Poor BIPA.
