An American-Style Strong Brown Ale developed by eight Redhook brewers working in four teams of two to create one beer. The ale reflects a compilation of each team’s individual receipes that were then carefully blended into one distinct beer. 8-4-1 Expedition Ale offers complexy flavor notes, delivering malty sweetness, medium bitterness with hints of smoked flavors and oak chips balanced by the addition of honey, brown sugar and candi sugar.

como imperial definitivamente califica; como brown ale tambien. pero la combinación puede dejar un poco que desear. interesante pero mejores imperiales mas oscuras

"still expecting more from RH’s limited series. Not sure why. This was pretty standard beer...nothing deserving of a special release. nice looking. dominated by muddled sweet malt and too much brown sugar. the honey makes an appearance as do the bitter hops, but a bit too late. an average beer that costs more than many great ones."

6/5/2010. From bottle. Depp amber with a white head. Sweet malty aromas with caramel and dried fruit. Light hoopy flavors, but mostly caramel. Not bad.

Bottle (vintage Spring 2010) pours dark amber with average tan head that laces the glass nicely. Aroma of malts and fruit. Flavors of cherries, citrus, and lightly toasted malts with some wordiness and hints of honey.

7/08/2010: Redhook 8-4-1 Expedition Oak Aged Ale Brewed with Honey... Aroma: Citrus candy/syrup; light brown sugar; toasty malts. Appearance: Ruby/garnet color; shiny and transparent; creamy beige head. Flavor: Toasted pale malts, slightly grainy; citrusy; pretty sweet and slightly syrupy; falls off after the middle; dry oaky notes with a vanilla quality; mild bitterness (probably smoothed out by the oak). Palate: Medium body; starts a bit thick, but thins out a bit over the course of the bottle. Overall: Not half bad, good actually; better than expected; nothing fantastic and not worth the price.

1 pint 6 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. by Vol. 9.5%). Rating #161 for this beer.

The look is clear, golden in color, and has a beige colored head. The smell is caramel, malts, and ok with some hops. The taste is hoppy, bitterness, caramel, and malts.

Clear red - amber beer. Good pale tan head. Soft and semi dry palate. Smooth malt with a nice vanilla oak that doesn’t dominate. Well balanced by mellow hops - mildly bitter orange. Finishes with creamy malt and mild minerals. Dry. Nicely joined up. If not a tad dry this would have been in the 4s.

Pours a rich orange amber color with a finger of eggshell foam. On the nose there is a lot of sweet caramel, touch of dark fruit and a trace of smoke. The palate is kind of sticky with lots of toffee and brown sugar sweetness.... background notes of fig, dates and even a little raisin. Round barrel notes of vanilla and toasted oak... little touch of bitterness on the finish.

Tasted from bomber bottle into a rocks glass at the Royale gathering, thanks Kier! Cool bottle design and story, lots of cool ingredients/processes listed (honey, cherry-wood smoked malts, oak bourbon barrels, brown sugar...) but overall, the concept was more interesting than the resulting beer. Very faint aroma, but some subtle malt, hops and bourbon, no yeast, no smoke. Flavor was much more bitter than I expected, from hops but some husky burnt grain bitterness as well. Caramelly and a bit cidery. Medium body and carbonation, thin and slick mouthfeel, not as rounded and bready as I would’ve liked. Not bad, but not as good nor complex as presented.
