COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1982 Redhook was born in a converted transmission shop in the Ballard District outside of Seattle, WA. After 28 years of brewing, Redhook is paying homage to its roots by releasing Big Ballard Imperial IPA. Big Ballard has a rich, deep golden and a very assertive hop character that hits you in the nose before reaching your lips. The flavor and aroma are balanced with complex malty undertones. While it has a friendly side, make no mistake - Big Ballard is brewed for diehard IPA fans. Big Ballard pairs well with sausage, cured meats with ground mustard, spicy Mexican or Asian dishes, and barbeque . Available in the Western US year round in both 22 ounce bottles and on draught.

Bomber pours clear copper with off white head. The aroma emits citrus meat and rinds along with lesser amounts of earthiness and spicy hops. The first sense of the taste is that it seems like it may have lost its edge with a bit too much time on the shelf. I get malts mixing with pine hops and citrus hops and then a lesser amount of earthiness mixing with faint caramel like malts. The hops contain a pretty decent level of resiny goodness keeping the interest level elevated. If this is a tad old I’d love to try a fresh one.

On tap at Redhook brewpub. Pours out a golden amber topped with a small off white head. Aroma was of bitter grape fruit peels, light caramel sweetness, and some malt. Taste much as the aroma with the bitter grapefruit peel along with some floral hops.

draft at woodinville. crystal clear bright gold with medium amber ovrrtones. creamy off white head. tangerine, pine, and sugar nose...not powerful for a dipa, but smells delicious. creamy medium body with forceful but slow carb. caramel, pine, tangerine and sugar on the mid palate. not much power for a dipa, but solid little ipa...at 9.5%.

Bottle from 4/5/10. Pours with a hazy, nearly neon yellow body and a small white head. Good lace. Aroma of caramel, light citrus zest and pine. Some melon. Taste is light citrus, malt, caramel, plastic, sort of a mess of bitter (but not pleasant) flavors. Some citrus bitter and grassy, some caramel malt presence too. Lively bubbles. Some quinine in the finish (odd, first time I have tasted that in a beer). Meh.

22oz bottle from Bevmo. OK, I’m not happy with Bevmo, this may be the last beer I buy from there. Just opened this beer and it is oxidized. Looking closer at the bottle the bottling date is 6/26/10! Got a flight early tomorrow morning, so can’t take it back. I should have checked the bottle better when I bought it
Appearance: Pours hazy amber with a medium sized off-white head and good lacing
Aroma: Citrus and caramel
Taste: Caramel, cardboard with a sweet bitterness in the finish
Footbalmed and hope to rate it again (with a fresh bottle).

Bottle. Brilliant amber color/ rich off white head. Mild soap, pine grass aromas. medium bodied. Nice hoppy pine, floral flavors with a caramel, mild boozy back drop.

Bottle:   Vibrant orange, translucent, deep golden hues, large off-white frothy head, splotchy lacing.   Citrus rind and alcohol are dominant.   While not real strong, I can tell its a little bit of a boozer.   Shallow hop flavors up front, some rind, luckily not as stong as the nose suggested.   A little astringent, with some alcohol warming.   Happy its not as hot as I thought on the nose.   Doesn’t seem quite like an Imperial IPA as it needs more malt body.   Wished it was a bit more citrusy and floral, or at least had a touch more sweetness as a start.   Not bad overall, but can be summed up as pale citrus rind and soft alcohol.

Bottle. One of those beers I swear I’ve had before and surprised I haven’t recorded notes on. I’m superbly impressed ... beautiful pour of crystal clear metallic-orange color, huge pock-marked head. The aroma is prototypical IPA, fruity, woodsy, piney, outdoorsy. This beer also drinks the way I want my beers to drink -- full of flavor, classic American hoppiness, fully built backbone, and a nice little bitter flourish at the very finish. Fully bodied, clinging to the palate. This is A+ stuff. (#6709, 7/18/2017)

luttonm (6758) - Seattle, Washington, USA - MAY 11, 2017
Bottle in Seattle. Creamy foam, dark clear amber gold body. Pretty strong resin and orange hop nose. Rich orange hop, pretty inviting and delicious. Smooth bodied IPA with some good orange and resin character underlying the sweet clean malt backing. Slightly simpler and smoother than an equilvalent small craft brewer but the flavors are rather terrific. Fairly tasty and enjoyable.

Bottle, bright orange pour with thin white foam, aroma of metallic malty pine, flavors of some bitter grapefruit rind and weak malt
