A solid porter. A bit weak for my tastes, and a bit too sweet. ............. NWHopHead99 (58) - Tacoma, Washington, USA - FEB 14, 2002
Not a beer I will drive out of my way to obtain, but the Blackhook should be one of Redhook's frontliners! It's dark stout color rewards you with a clean, hoppy, rich winter-beer flavour. I prefer Widmer Brother's Winter Nakt, but the Blackhook has a nice dry flavour that is palatable pint after pint. boto (2283) - Granby, Connecticut, USA - MAR 31, 2002
UPDATED: JAN 19, 2003 As with all of RedHook's beers, very good, but not quite exceptional. When looking at 8 differfent tap handles, it is a high pick! Nitro version: still quite good. Almost too close to being a Guinness copy. Darkover (1545) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - JUN 18, 2002
Roasted aroma, small beige head. Roasted malt flavor. Light body. Hoppy finish stephen (308) - California, USA - JUL 30, 2002
On Nitro at BW3 in Knoxville. Beautiful. Slightly sweet. Chocolate shines through with a slight roasty note. A session porter for sure. I didn't get the lively hopping as described in the commercial description.

this is a pretty good porter. pours black with little head that doesn't last long anyway. very good chocolate malt flavoring and it is well balanced with the hops i will definatly try more from these guys DOdubble (92) - UVA, Virginia, USA - JAN 21, 2003
Not bad at all............................................... biomechanic (55) - Washington, USA - JUL 13, 2003
Not a bad beer but is kind of watery for the style. Not very alcoholic and goes down smooth. DYCSoccer17 (3714) - Woodland, California, USA - AUG 31, 2003
Pours a black and nearly opaque color with a very mild light brown head that does not hang around. Nose is roasty and nutty. Star is pretty undefined, followed by a very hearty rich nuttyness that is not bitter like the bottle promised. There might be a slightest hint of fruit in there as well. The palate is perfect and feels great going down. A very drinkable beer. There may be some complexity that is lacking. ChazyRPh (583) - Chazy, New York, USA - AUG 31, 2003
Typical pour of a porter, very black. Smoky aroma, roasted malt, roasted nuts. Very smooth, nothing smacks you in the face initially, but the finish is a caramelly, roasted malt, nuttiness. Nice sweetness, but not overpowering. The only knock is the lack of a taste initially, otherwise this is a very nice beer.
