Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook’s signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. Its eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. The well-rounded finish of Redhook ESB makes it a wonderful companion to grilled meats. It is also great with game and cheeses. Available year round.

I was too kind to this one. It should have been around a 3.5. Slightly bitter. Golden amber pour. Rated 11/29/2000

A: The pour is amber/light copper with a creamy off-white head. S: Some moderate caramel and toffee notes and a floral, earthy hoppiness. Not an overly intense nose, but it’s an English style afterall... T: Very bready on the palate with a pretty significant amount of hop bitterness. Again, the hops are primarily floral and earthy, and the sweetness is not quite as noticeable as on the nose. M: The body is medium and so is the level of carbonation. The finish leaves a lingering bitterness. D: I’m not an expert on ESBs, but I think this one isn’t too bad. Sure, not perfectly to style (or maybe even close), but it’s easy to drink and flavorful.

355ml bottle (Viisi Pennia, Helsinki)
Simple mashy aroma, caramalts, some hints of sweet nuttiness. Full smooth palate, pleasant carbonation crispens it. Spicy and nutty retronasals, some sharp corners, sweetish too. Big malt-forward body, a little sweet, some sourish hints, nice bittering hops, but heading towards metallic and papery at times. Feel 3.3 is an underrate, let’s put some plus signs on taste and overall. Slips down easily, doesn’t feel like a 5.8% beer at all, nice session bitter. Not sweet enough to be an amber, this is just an ESB. And a pretty tasty one at that.

Cask at GBBF08. Weak fruity aroma. Almost clear amber colour. Very small frothy white head. OK fruit flavour, some alcohol. Has a hint of plastic, but nothing to worry about.

Aroma of light roasted malt with somewhat floral hop. Coppery kind of color with a white head that didn’t amount to much. Pleasant surprise. NIce floral hop, with possibly a bit of citrus, and some roasted malt. Very like an English ESB, but more strong in flavor. Medium body with mild carbonation. Pleasant drink. Finish is not overly anything. Nice balance. Good taste.

Bottle. Pours a light amber color with a small white head that goes away quickly. The aroma was very fruity and malt. Taste is bitter and very easy to drink. this is one of my favorite ESB.

Ratman197 (14958) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - JUN 15, 2006
Bottle poured a clear amber with a small lasting ivory head. Aromas of carmel, a hint of earthiness and light fruit. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, some earthiness and a hint of grapefruit rind with a pleasently bitter finish.

DSG (14921) - Tel Aviv, ISRAEL - DEC 9, 2013
Bottle shared at a tasting at kerenmk’s place. Slightly hazy deep golden-orange. Aroma of slightly stale malt, cookies, fruity notes and a light floral hops hint. Sweetish flavor with malt, some fruitiness, biscuit, cardboard notes, caramel and a finish with mild bitterness, a bit earthy. Medium-bodied.
