Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhooks signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. Its eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. The well-rounded finish of Redhook ESB makes it a wonderful companion to grilled meats. Bottled (according to the label) less than a month prior to this review. Very retentive head and lacing. There is something in that aroma that I just cant figure out. Reminds me ever so slightly of human solid waste (no joke). Good amber color. Very crisp and dry mouthfeel, light to medium body. There is no sweetness to this ale, no maltiness. If a bitter is supposed to be "balanced", this isnt. Hops are very evident, but not overpowering. I dont dislike this at all. It is a different experience than most beers Ive had.

Aroma is bitter, caramel malt, earthy hop, one-dimensional. Appearance is amber golden, mostly clear, white head. Taste is bitter, earthy hop, caramel malt, easy drinking. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, bitter caramel aftertaste. Overall, easy drinking, although not great for the style.

Dark copper Thin white head. Malty caramel flavor. Subtle sweetness. Nice tasty beer. Not sure why this rates so low.

(12oz bottle, usa) AROMA: malt, vanilla, cheese/dairy, some fruit/cherry. APPEARANCE: medium golden, tad brown, a little cloudy, standard head. TASTE: cherry, some kind of chocolate or nut, a bit sweet upfront, toast, bread crust, some herbal, and light hoppy finish. PALATE: crisp, bright, a little oily, fresh. OVERALL: nice beer, very drinkable, not as bitter as expected, would be a solid, above average every day beer.

From a stubby nose 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Pours gold with head and lace. Aroma of grains, pale malt, straw hops, orange zest. Medium carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of pale malt, grains, minerals, caramel, slight molassas, cinnamon, tropical fruit rind. Overall sweet and malty with some interesting complexity.

This ESB poured a nice amber colour with a huge off white, creamy head. Scents include cereal, honey and a little caramel. First swig was not bad with flavours of cereal, light hops, honey and mild caramel. Finish was a little bitter with hoppy caramel flavours lingering... ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured a mid-orangey-amber with a one-finger creamy frothy head that diminished slowly to a cap that laced OK. Carbonation high, average and with medium sized bubbles. Aroma of caramel, malt and hints of sweet citrus/orange. Taste of caramel malt, quite sweet with low bitterness. Light body. Smooth and soft with a short sweet finish.
