This esb was definately not what I had expected, but I was not disappointed. It tasted quite sweet. awebster (166) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - OCT 31, 2005
A great bitter in my book. Good hop character with a clean finish, not overbearing dryness. Copperish/amber appearance. Delightful! cmc619 (501) - California, USA - JUL 6, 2011
I’ve been drinking this beer basically since I’ve been a craft beer drinker, but I haven’t rated it, and I haven’t had it in a while. The ESB smells like a brewery: seriously, it smells like mash (in a good way, of course). Color is copper to light brown. Head is perfect, consistent, and persistent. Mouthfeel silky smooth. Flavor is rich caramel sweetness with a fresh hop kick--really a mild bitterness in the finish, but great hop flavor/aroma. Overall, this beer demonstrates outstandingly drinkable depth of flavor while retaining a beautiful balance. I’m surprised how much I like this, as for a while I had passed it off as boring. I guess it’s a classic of American craft for a reason. Partisn92 (11) - Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 30, 2014
Very clean and crisp. Almost no aftertaste. Refreshing to the extreme, tasty and overall a great beer.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2017 Love this beer! By far the best of all the US macros. Hazy copper pour with lovely, fluffy white head. 5.8 abv hits the sweet spot between too little and too much. Character is quaffable and yet delicious. To borrow a line, tastes great and less filling! A sixer of Redhooks makes any Sunday afternoon - such as today - finer!

I was too kind to this one. It should have been around a 3.5. Slightly bitter. Golden amber pour. Rated 11/29/2000 olorin1 (7) - charles city ia, Iowa, USA - AUG 10, 2010 does not count

Clear dark orange. Smells and tastes like Fresh Baked Bread, Yeasts, Floral Hops, Malts and a slight fig-like flavor. The flavor itself is very rich despite it’s simplicity. It’s light bodied with some carbonation that gives it a crisp feel. Overall, it’s a beer thats perfect for any situation or setting, whether it’s sitting outdoors on a summer day or watching a football game on a Sunday afternoon mikedR (1561) - Gilbert, Arizona, USA - JUN 25, 2013
Solid ESB. Clear amber in color. Nice full mouthfeel, and malty taste befitting the style. Good bitterness as well. Overall quite balanced, and a solid B in grade. Would love to see Red Hook kick this up a notch with an imperial or "extreme" version.

Pours a really nice amber color. Nicely balanced beer, notes of fruit and honey. Easy to drink. Just delightful
