It pours a chestnut brown in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. There wasn’t any head and it left ring-like yet spotty lacing around the glass. The smell has an abundance of nutty malts and a bit of alcohol. The taste is basically the same with just some sweetness and hints of spice. There is a slight bitterness but it isn’t anything overbearing.
The palate is about a low to medium sort of feel with nothing harsh on the tongue. It has a dry aftertaste and finish. Overall, it is a drinkable beer. Its good for its style and decent for me.

12 oz. bottle from gregwilsonstl - thanks again, Greg! Part of his generous Free Beer Week box. Can’t tell you the last time I had any Redhook. This one pours a deep, barely cloudy, slightly browned amber with a finger of beige head that settles unevenly and laces the glass. Notes of toasted and caramel malts, earth and grass and leaves, soap, and mild spice. Light-medium bodied, with a malty, earthy mouthfeel that finishes with a lingering intense soap-like bitterness. Pours with a dark mahogany body that has excellent clarity and is topped by a durable, foamy beige head. Soapy lacing.
Aroma mildly to moderately spicy.
Flavor: winter spices, moderate in strength, with earthy hops and faint dark bread. Moderately bitter.

330ml bottle, thank Jaanis. Pours dark golden caramel, medium sized beige head, doesn’t last good. Aroma is malty, caramelly, sweet, hoppy. Taste is hoppy, caramelly, some burnt sugar, malty. metal. Lively carbo, medium body. Nothing special.

(12oz bottle) AROMA: sweet and spicy malt, bread, some hops to balance, herbs, earthy. APPEARANCE: solid medium to dark brown, soft/frothy tan head, reduces down to a oily film, minimal visible carbonation, a tad opaque. TASTE: a little sweetness, dry fruit/prunes/raisins, chocolate, dark toast, citrus peel, roasted nuts, round hoppy middle with dry hoppy finish. PALATE: good balance, medium body, full finish, long bitterness on checks and back of tongue/throat. OVERALL: nice ale. good roastiness without being over the top, substantial bitter follow thru. If you like bitter ales, this could be a very good daily beer. I’d choose it over Guinness since I like dark/coffee/chocolate flavors with ale characteristics. Bottle from Taniguchi with a date stamp of Sept. 18th, 2016 served in a nonic half-pint glass.
A clear mahogany brown color with a thick beige head that leaves a respectable amount of lacing clinging to the sides of the glass. The smell is of a rich malty biscuit/rye bread with a tangy citrus glaze that is almost iced tea like (orange pekoe?). The taste is bitter citrus, tannic, cocoa paste, then sweet iced tea notes and some chocolate.
Quite an interesting take on a winter warmer with citrusy hops at the forefront then a bitter bread, coffee grounds and chocolate flavor. The coffee/chocolate roast continues in the finish and the hints of acridness tell me Black Patent malt probably played a small role in making this beer. Good to try once but I find the recipe doesn’t quite gel together.
