Pretty tasty, low in alcohol for the style, but plenty flavor, nutty and brown and tasty, like eating a filbert nut on the fourth of july, awesome beer, I can drink 1000 of these in honor of our country’s birth. BREWMUSKCLES (2687) - New Jersey, USA - MAY 1, 2007
thin and substantial. layered with a malt and semi hop flavor that joust a bit with the flavorings and work well in the mix. a bit busy but not confusing. refreshing and could be drank most anytime of year. licorice flavor just perceptable and is woven in by craft (or perhaps good fortune). just a nice tart and short finish that lingers more on the mind. looks good in the pinter glass. bravo! cmc619 (501) - California, USA - DEC 6, 2010
Tastes like a sturdily hopped APA with a bit more alcohol warmth, even though it’s not too strong at 5.9%. Nice burnt orange color, fully translucent, good head and lacing. Overall just a really well-brewed, great-drinking beer, with no skimping on the hops. Darkmagus82 (2302) - - AUG 17, 2014

Poured from bottle into pint glass
Appearance –The beer pours a mahogany-amber color with a big two finger off white head. The head has a good level of retention, fading to leave only a light level of lacing.
Smell – The aroma is bready and sweet of toffee. These aromas are mixed with some nutty and pine aromas, balancing out the sweet and malty.
Taste – The taste starts out with a bready and toffee taste. A light citrus and dark fruit flavors are also upfront with a spiced flavor of cinnamon and nutmeg quickly after coming to the tongue. Nutty and some bitter pine flavors then come to the tongue. The mix of these flavors takes the taste to its end where a bready and lightly bittered, but still overall caramel and toffee sweet, flavor are left on the tongue.
Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is on the medium to creamier side with a carbonation level that is rather average Overall the body was very nice for accentuating the fruit and spice flavors of the brew, while the carbonation maintained an exciting and very drinkable feel for the brew.
Overall – A nice tasty, slightly sweeter, yet still roasty and spiced holiday brew. It has a nice feel and price, which when mixed with the good taste make for a brew to try and one to possibly go back to again and again. ordybill (1759) - Douglasville, Georgia, USA - JUN 28, 2017
Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a murky golden brown color with a small off-white head. The aroma is winter spices. The taste is a lot milder than expected, almost watery.

It was good but not great. Well worth trying I’d say. lunaticharness (183) - Torrance, California, USA - APR 29, 2003
UPDATED: OCT 19, 2003 re-rate 2003 edition ok either the original i had was a way dif recipe... or this went down hill really fast, a stale malt aroma that is kind of doughy - with a bit of light hop scent, very nice ruby color with an offwhite huge rocky head that dissipates to a thin ring, man the flavor used to be so good! but now it tastes very metallic and very bad medicinal bitterness - has hints of fruity sweetness but is majorly hidden behind the metal and bitter, my thoughts are this bad boy needs some time to age, ill stuff 2 in the closet and rate in 6 and 12 months later and see how it goes!
definitely ESB's big brother, better than all the other redhook brews, just too bad they dont make it year round.. UNCCTF (584) - Cary, North Carolina, USA - NOV 20, 2003
Dark copper with a big eggshell head. Hops filled my nose as soon as the bottle was opened. Flavor is very hoppy and a little bith roasty, with a very slight hint of alcohol and fruit. A very pleasant surprise! travise (3) - Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 26, 2003 does not count
2003 bottle. Slight floral aroma. Nice warm maltiness followed by a nice hoppy bite. Nicely balanced. I could put down a few of these. csbosox (1229) - Prairie Village, Kansas, USA - JAN 16, 2005
Tasted at Jan. KC Bier Meisters meeting. Dark amber red, off white head, nice lacing. Citrusy hops nose, also floral and spicy aromas. Hops driven flavor, spicy, floral notes. nice mouthfeel, "full" body. Dry finish, hops flavor.
