This looks like, smells like and may be like a Belgium ale. But it’s a bit thin and doesn’t have a carry. Does not have the alcohol burn that you may get with Belgium beer. UPDATED: NOV 10, 2013 Impressive combination of Belgian and Antipodean style and ingredients. Would be just what the doctor ordered if one was looking to progress from the ubiquitous IPAs to the more interesting Abbey ales. Pours light willow sap amber with a thin white head. Mildly lively carbonation. Mouthfeel is on the thinner side. Taste is burnt caramel sugar with a bit of belgian spice and a lightly smoked flavour. Long aftertaste, not very hoppy. Jimthechap (2064) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - MAY 29, 2013
An intriguing idea for a Belgian Ale, especially considering that fresh hops are usually the last thing on a Belgian brewer’s mind... I say that, but I have never met a Belgian brewer so I am probably pontificating for the sake of showing off. Ignore me.
Anyway, slightly hazy with a fairly coarse intermittent bead of bubbles. A skim of milky head sits like a gibbous moon over the top of a golden honey coloured body. The Belgian yeast is the first familiar note and then along comes fresh gooseberry, pineapple chunks (not lumps), banana and guava. It is a nice balance of aromas and to be honest I was expecting something a little more lop-sided.
A taste reveals a good mouthfeel and then the Belgian yeast comes initially to the fore. Just when you pick the yeast along comes a fruity rumble of those same fruit salad notes and a pinch of bitterness. I mean a pinch as if it is physically pinching the sides of your tongue with astringency. This accentuates the fruitiness on the finish with the emphasis on ripe sour gooseberry and some lemon peel. I wasn’t expecting this beer to be balanced or subtle given the fresh hopping and as for the mix of styles, well bugger me if it hasn’t worked. This is why Renaissance won best overseas brewery in the Australian beer awards this week. It is based upon obvious talent and elegant beers like this one.

Smells citrus fruity, like a lemon and honey drink... Quite strong flavours, especially the fresh hops that kinda jump out at you. Mouthfeel full yet still light, with a long slightly bitter aftertaste.. Rather Belgian and very nice! omega (899) - NEW ZEALAND - MAY 6, 2013
Belgian yeast on the nose with a nice clean golden pour. Quite big on the palate with a lingering bitterness that hangs around. Creamy goodness in a bottle.
