4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
There was nothing I didn’t like about this beer. So deep, so rich:
Poured an enticing deep, dark apricot colour with a fluffy head that had a tinge of green (?!) and stayed from pouring to end. In fact there’s still a good quarter inch of bubbles left in my glass fifteen minutes after the last drop. Grassy aromas intially and then a punch on the face of blue cheese mould. Other aromas include fruit leather, spices like turmeric, cumin and garam masala as well as stewed apples.
When I put lips to beer there was a shockwave of bitterness and then malt. It was like dipping your finger into a can of brewing malt and sticking it straight into your mouth. The bitterness lingers on the sides of the tongue, but at the front there opened up a dehydrated apricot sweetness. This beer was lipsmacking and floral on the finish.
This was a real winner. It ticked all the boxes and was worth every cent of the fairly expensive NZ$12 I paid for it. A real antipasto restaurant beer and one I shall be recommending in spadefuls.
Is this my favourite beer?
Bottled. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. My bottle was bought in december 2011. So I might have a 2011 version, not listed as a separate entry. The aroma has citrus, pine and hints of apple juice. Clear, copper coloured beer with a slight off-white head. The taste is quite bitter, almost harsh even. It is light malty, has citrus and pine, some light maltiness there as well. It is a refreshing brew with moderate carbonation. Nice to taste the new Rakau hops (New by then). Good one. 500ml bottle [Thanx David!]. Cloudy amber colour with huge, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Slightly cautious piney hop aroma, caramel malty basis. Taste is robust malty, minimal sweetness, a touch of biscuit, slightly bitter hoppy overtones, resin, pine, sweat, a touch of citrus; prickling carbonation, lasting malty finish with hints of husk, dust, scratching the edge to smoky. Nice composition with strengths on the malty side. bb (9657) - Alamo, California, USA - APR 5, 2013
Bottle. Amber beer with a dark cream head. Grapefruit aroma. Citrus and dust flavor with earth, malt, and light vanilla. Medium bodied. OK bitterness. Malt and citrus linger with light earth and dust. reebtogi (6326) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - FEB 8, 2013
500ml bottle pours a hazy orangey brown color with a finger of white head that leaves some really nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is very pleasing with citrus and pine with some hints of tropical fruit. Taste is a piney and citrusy bitterness with a tropical fruity sweetness (perhaps pineapple) which is nicely balanced. Medium bodied with some nice carbonation. A very well done DIPA and ranks right up there with some of the best that I have tried to date. ngeunit1 (1555) - Waltham, Massachusetts, USA - AUG 30, 2012
A - Pours a cloudy orange-amber with a finger of frothy off-white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of grapefruit, pineapple, peach, tropical fruit, and earth hops with sweet caramel and bready malts, with some biscuit.
T - Starts off with sweet caramel malts with grapefruit, pineapple, peach, and other tropical hops with some bitterness. Through the middle, some earthy and piney hops come through with some more bitterness and some bready and biscuit malts. The finish is a mix of sweet bready and caramel malts with tropical fruits and earthy resiny hops and bitterness.
M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and resiny with a dry and bitter finish.
D - Very drinkable. Very interesting hop profile, but overall good mix of hops, malt, and bitterness.

Pours a reddish orange. A really dank aroma. A nice floral bitterness lies underneath. Some tea notes as well. Both heavy and light at the same time. nick76 (4399) - Tampa, Florida, USA - AUG 13, 2012
The aroma is sweet with brown sugar and malt but also heavily hopped with both pine and grass. The appearance is dark amber with a head of tiny bubbles and floating particles. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is thick. Overall I like it but it has a few faults. Matts_Property (837) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 18, 2012
Bottle split with mcberko back in February 2011. Pours a solid murky orange with a lasting brown head. Aroma of lots of candied fruits, some pine or resin, some floral/meadowy notes. Flavour is the same including some feint citrus - lemon, tropical fruits - mango. Medium bodied, sweet, well balanced with the lasting citrus hop bitterness. Decent. Bottle. Poured hazy copper color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Medium to heavy earthy hop aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy smooth bittesweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a solid beer. Half liter brown bottle pours murky copper brown with off white head. The aroma is mostly pine hops and then tart with citrus as well as a slight sweet maltiness in the background. The taste is similar and is front and forward with pine hops sliding into notes of tart grapefruit meat and some spicy hops around the edges. Below those notes is a thin river of near sugar sweet maltiness. This doesn’t pop with hops or richness that I’m used to in the style.
