Zlotta (2788) - Hagen, GERMANY - MAR 24, 2017
0.375 l bottle (or whats left of it) from belgiuminabox.com, bottled in October 2015, about one-and-a-half-year old. Gusher! Hazy, brownish red with a massive, quite fluffy, slowly diminishing, beige head. Sweetish, slightly sourish, quite dusty, minimally funky and a bit fruity aroma of oak, balsamic vinegar, cherries and lots of cellar. Slightly sweetish, moderately sour, dusty and moderately fruity taste of cellar, oak, red grapes, cherries, caramel and some almond, followed by a medium long, slightly bitter, moderately tart, rather dry, peppery and dusty finish. Medium body, slightly astringent, dry and very effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Tastes quite nice, but surely not my favourite Oud Bruin. Not really convinced by any of their brews by the way.

bartlebier (3776) - Belchium im Biersgau, GERMANY - JUL 4, 2016
75cl bottled OKT 2015, Geers. - Vivacious pour, 60% towering beige head on an acajou furniture body. - Viscous balsamico rosso in aroma joins strawberry jam caramels, raisins and roasted hazelnuts. Pleasantly dry body with all acidity and sweetness neatly tucked away under a lively blanked of roast. Flavour: bitterness and tannins seem to add to the small batch roughness coming from both the roasted barley caramels, generous Poperinge hop loads and the wood? High attack of roast and vinegar on vivid carbonation. Lovely small batch Oud Bruin with a personality - will revisit.

Glass of cream to light beige, ultradense & fine foam, stable, over small layer of dirty orange-brown, heavily carbonated beer. Wood, lactic acid, rainwater. Seriously hampered byt the ridiculous head. Wood, initial bitterness as from paintstripper or walnutpeel; lactic acid acidity underneath. Ironoxyde in the head. More lactic/diary features in the finish. Faint chocolate. Medium bodied, mild acidthinning, velvety texture not in the least thanks to the solid head. Seriously severe. If I may hazard an educated guess, a tad more hops than usual for an Oud Bruin?

Alengrin (5006) - BELGIUM - DEC 19, 2015
Bottle from Belgiuminabox, nicely wrapped in paper like the old Liefmans (and even Rodenbach) beers, and like the others from this new micro brewery. Opens with a loud bang, but without gushing. Thick and frothy, whipped cream-like, moussy, pale yellowish beige head over an initially clear, warm and deep burgundy coloured beer with ruby hue, dark but translucent in the beginning, evidently becoming clouded and more murky brown with deposit. Interesting and very appealing aroma of lots of candied figs, marzipan, caramel, passion fruit, balsamic vinegar, blackberry, elderberry, wet wood, some light vanilla tannins, milk chocolate, overripe gooseberry (I cant seem to get over the berries), dried banana, hazelnut oil, candied cherry, tawny port, cake dough. Tangy, crisp onset, tart and very estery with all kinds of red and green berries dancing around against a background of crabapple, pear, orange and faint banana, quite spritzy carbo but not disturbingly so and lending it a somewhat champenoise effect, lactic sherryish and lightly sour cream-like tartness proceeds till well into the finish with a gently drying effect, countered by a soft, smooth and full caramelly and lightly nutty malt backbone; finish is a continuation of this maltiness and tartness, including the esters which return retronasally, but also adds a late and soft, earthy hop bitterness for structure as well as some very clear, almost furniture-like oaky drought and a vague suspicion of vinous alcohol enough to warm the throat a bit, but otherwise very well hidden. Ends notably dry. I absolutely adore the aroma of this beer, it joins dark berries with elegant caramel maltiness and oak - and the actual taste does not disappoint after this. Like the cherry version they made out of this, this is an exemplary oud bruin (Flemish sour ale) indeed, worthy to withstand the comparison with some of the Rodenbach products which are righteously regarded as the archetype of the style; it is, however, altogether different in laying more emphasis on the malts, as if it wants to nod to Belgian abbey dubbel. If this is the path this new Belgian micro brewery has chosen: kudos, they manage not only to draw attention to the sadly fading oud bruin tradition, but also to honor it with this highly enjoyable, though somewhat atypical example of the style. I will keep a close watch on this brewery from now on - big cheers for Vandewalle, these people clearly know what they are doing!
