COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Teaming up with Schmaltz Brewing for the first time, Terrapin Beer Co. returns for a third year as a production partner for Reunion ’11. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise finds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark, complex ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and chili peppers. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle spicy aroma. The flavor begins with complex malt overtones and quickly gives way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss. Just when you thought it was over, the heat from the chilies sneaks in and coats your tongue with tantalizing heat.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

Appearance: Pours a medium brown body with a fairly high-standing cap of lightly tan foam, though it founders quickly.

Smell: Sweet-scented aroma of sugary chocolate, caramel, and vanilla bean, with a bit of dark fruitiness underneath and even less of that chopped green chiles.

Taste: Toasty, chocolaty, caramelly malts with a medium degree of sweetness at the start, then, some of the promised vanilla, some of the nibs (though more of a Tootsie Roll element), and some of the spicy chili peppers (delivering no more heat than needed - or wanted). Slight hint of raisin. Modestly nutty. Herbal undertones preclude a mild bitterness. Lingering chili pepper spice beyond the sweetish, malty finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Fairly flavorful and interesting. It’s not great, but it’s pretty good. Always glad to use my alcoholism to help sick people.

Can’t remember who sent this, but thanks for the bottle! Pours a cloudy deep brown with a slight ruby hue and a earthy white head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of sweet grains with some toffee and vanilla. Flavor begins with sweet grains and a bit of earthiness, with some vanilla and toffee coming out in the finish.

Shared by deyholla- thanks Derek! Pours a deep fig-mahogany. nose is malts, slight deep /dark fruits and a hint or red wine. taste shares the notes, but ends in a distinct red wine taste i cant shake. Im torn; super interesting and semichallenging beer but also not my cup of tea.

Pours deep mahogany into a tulip. Off-white head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing to skim surface. Sweet chocolate and vanilla aromas. Thin with sweet dark caramel, toffee and chocolate upfront turning to a mild spicy chili finish.

22oz. Pours a deep dark black/brown, but does let a small amount of light through. Tan head fads rather quickly to merely a thin ring. The nose is certainly the chocolate and some roasted malts with some sugary notes, but a little on the thin side. The taste is sweet dark roasted malts with chocolate and I am picking up a bit of the vanilla mixed in. The chilis are adding a bit of flare and hits the tongue like a bit of spice. Overall, this is a nice offering by Terrapin, but I thought it was a bit thin on packing their normally punch. In saying that, I would certainly take another quickly after finishing this one.

Blah. The commercial description had me drooling but it did not live up to my expectations. Aroma was very weak. Could pick up some dark malt but was very weak. Pour was a nice deep dark brown with a near tan ring for a head. Taste was very disappointing. Was all roasted malt and chocolate in the front. It was very faint and unpronounced. After the swallow there was a slight tingle of the chilies. The nice strong carbonation in the beer makes it difficult to tell if it’s the carbonation or the chilies biting the tongue. Slightly roasted chocolate aftertaste. Very boring.

On tap at Proof. Notes: vanilla, christmas, herb, spice, sweet, caramel, brown sugar -- didn’t catch any of the chili pepper. Ok, not my fav.

(22oz bottle from Sun Devil). Pours a cola/root beer color with a tan head that shows some lacing. Tiny carbonation bubbles present. Aroma has cocoa, caramel and a touch of vanilla. Taste is sweet chocolate with a bit of roast and some pepper. Medium bodied with an oily texture. Finish is a bit harsh with the roast. This beer has a really nice chocolate flavor, but it seems that it could be a tad bit better integrated. Overall, pretty nice and I’d gladly try it again.

Bomber pours dark brown/black with slight amber with a medium tan head. Aroma is heavy chocolate, molasses, vanilla, and malt. Taste is weaker then the aroma lets on, I’m finding no chilies or heat. Taste is a let down would have like to see the flavors more pronounced all the way through and some heat.
