Reunion - A Beer For Hope 2012 (Shmaltz Brewing)

RATINGS: 139   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.56/5   SEASONAL: Special   EST. CALORIES: 240   ABV: 8%
Teaming up with Terrapin Brewing Co. for the second time, Shmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’12. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in the venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle to Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (

This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and cinnamon. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle cinnamon aroma. Complex malt overtones quickly give way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

22oz bomber pours a dark mahogany with light mocha colored head of foam. The aroma offers up chocolate covered malt balls, a bit of cinnamon and vanilla and then faint dark fruity esters. The taste is similar with malted chocolate milkshake and some chocolate bar and then a lesser degree of cinnamon and vanilla. Behind these notes I get a touch of sweet dark fruity esters. This comes together very nicely.

(old notes) Ordered both this and the Terrapin version in the same sitting. Snifter. Deep brown with a thin but lasting tan head. Cocoa, cinnamon, and vanilla aroma. Taste is chocolate, than spiced cocoa and a little chestnut meatiness. A little sweeter than the Terrapin-first iteration. Very enjoyable.

Dark pour with a good amount of tan head. Aroma is nice with dark roasted malt giving off cocoa, espresso and vanilla notes with a hint of sweetness. Medium bodied with a creamy mouth feel. Body is quite sweet with molasses, burnt sugar, some berry notes and the cinnamon is noticeable towards the finish. Finish is a roasted bitterness like burnt toast. A nice treat.

Pours mahogany with a large brown-beige head. smell hints of roast, chocolate, hints of cinnamon and vanilla. Taste is cocoa nibs, and roast. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and light prickly mouth-carbonation, Schmaltz Reunion ’12 finishes with some cocoa bitterness.

Decent brown. Can really taste the alcohol. Light tan head with some lacing. Aroma is sweeter than the taste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance: compared side by side with the terrapin version shows a lot more sweet chocolate and vanilla in the aroma, just a hint of the spicy character
Overall: flavor is drier compared to the draft, even the terrapin is coming out sweeter in comparison, rich chocolate, just a touch of the cinnamon, vanilla is all in the aroma, only upon warming does the sweetness begin to emerge

22oz bottle, shared. Cocoa, big cinnamon, spice. Cola. Spicy taste, light bitter. Clear dark brown color. Thin khaki head. Some dots of lace. Smooth, lighter carbonation, bigger body. More dry texture. Interesting brew to sip and share, but wouldn’t be so easy to drink in quantity

Bomber to snifter (thanks DrSilverworm). Looks good; an opaque brown with beige lacing. Smells malty. Tastes the same with cocoa too. Good on the palette. Solid.
