COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Teaming up with Terrapin Beer Co. for the third time, Schmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’13. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla, cinnamon, and coffee from NYC and Upstate New York. It was originally inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant.

Draught at Taproom at Bayview Corner, Langley, WA
Dark color, almost black, with beige compact head. Smell of old wood. Somehow also the flavor recalls old furniture, old sofa, some cocoa, leather; there is some chocolate malt and spices.
Weird but not bad.

mcberko (18434) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 9, 2015
22 oz. bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small tan head. Aroma brings out spicy peppers and cinnamon. Flavour is quite nasty, with stale spicy cinnamon upfront, with some spicy peppers. No hint of cocoa. Really quite stale and weak. Meh.

bhensonb (15515) - Woodland, California, USA - NOV 27, 2013
Bomber from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark ruddy copper (against strong light) with a foamy tan head. Aroma is primarily coffee/chocolate. Med + body. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, cinnamon. Hint of vanilla. Pretty tasty drink. Finishing towards dry, and coffee bitter.

\Bomber poured a clear reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of coffee, tobacco, cinnamon, vanilla and light cocoa. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of coffee, tobacco, light cinnamon and light cocoa with a smooth lingering coffee finish.

A clear mahogany brown ale with a thick lacing brown head. In aroma, sweet nutty coffee malt with caramel notes, chocolate, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet chocolate malt with coffee, nuts, very nice and interesting. Bottle at Brooklyn Pour 2013.

22oz bottle. Cola dark-brown body with large tan head. Aroma is moderately sweet, vanilla, some cocoa, cinnamon. Taste is moderately sweet, cocoa, cinnamon, some vanilla, caramel, light booziness. Medium-full body, some stickiness. Had the Terrapin version on draft last night, and am surprised by how much more I enjoyed that one.

Dark reddish brown pour. Tan head. Kind of tastes like an imperial brine that’s been treated like a hunahpus. I didn’t love it.

3.2
DocLock (10836) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 17, 2014
Bottle from variety pack Dec 2013. Pours hazy chestnut colored with 1-finger off-white head. Nose is huge hot peppers, coffee, some cacao. Tastes of coffee, roasty dark malt mild nuts, molasses, cacao, and jalapeno flavor late. Medium in palate heft and complexity, with more sticky caramel and cacao notes late.

marcus (10493) - Sacramento, California, USA - NOV 17, 2013
On tap at Capitol Beer, Sacramento. Pours dark brown with a rich tan head and a vanilla aroma. There is a sweet vanilla and chocolate flavor that turns bitter at the finish.

onceblind (10114) - Denver, Colorado, USA - NOV 16, 2014
Deep brown, nearly black, with a foamy light tan head. Very lovely nose of vanilla bean and cocoa nibbs and earthy fresh coffee, almost like a tiramisu. The flavor unfortunately falls apart a wee bit with some sort of flavor like chilli heat and bitter cocoa, with a bitter earthy woody vanilla tone and slightly acrid coffee. Overall its okay and somewhat tasty but it’s such a disappointment from the nose that it’s nearly hard to bear. More bitter and spicey than it ought to be.
