Teaming up with Schmaltz Brewing for the first time, Terrapin Beer Co. returns for a third year as a production partner for Reunion ’11. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise finds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (

This year’s beer is a dark, complex ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and chili peppers. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle spicy aroma. The flavor begins with complex malt overtones and quickly gives way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss. Just when you thought it was over, the heat from the chilies sneaks in and coats your tongue with tantalizing heat.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

Dorwart (2621) - Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA - JAN 1, 2012
Thin head which dissipates rather quickly. Very chocolaty aroma, almost heavy as you need to take a deep inhale to pull the aromas away from the surface of the beer. Some anise, vegetal aromas, some strong brewed tea and a bit of spicyness. Color is a dark reddish brown. Lots more chocolate in the flavor with a bit of vanilla and a late onset of heat from the chilli peppers. Just as the description states. Just a hint of the peppers so they don’t dominate the flavor which is nice. Lingering spicy and dry chalkyness. An interesting and decent brew.

Bottle shared by a friend. Clear reddish brown pour with a thick tan head. Aroma of maple syrup, caramel and grain. Caramel and chocolate malt flavor up front, then a bit of pepper before a sweet malty finish.

Bottle thanks to Dmac. Pours out a dark brown color with a small white head. Aroma is of lots of chocolate, cocoa, and light roasty notes. Taste is very rich chocolate, sweet vanilla, some spice, roast and a building lingering chili pepper note on the finish, which becomes more pronounced as the beer warms. Very tasty!

22oz. Bottle: Aroma of malt, chocolate, and a hint of chili. Poured dark brown/mahogany in color with a small, tan head that greatly diminished but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer, as well as around the edges. Cloudy. Sparkling. Excellent lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet and light to medium spicy. Tastes of malt, chocolate, chili, and a hint of soy sauce. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Malt, chili finish. 7.6%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

kwoeltje (2234) - Manchester, Missouri, USA - DEC 17, 2011
(bottle) dark brown. Malt aroma. Flavor of chocolate. Don’t really note the chili.

Bottle... Clear, dark crimson ale with a mid-sized, creamy, khaki head. Good retention. The nutty, chocolaty bouquet offers pistachio, praline, toffee and vanilla. Medium-bodied with fizzy carbonation. The flavor is a nicely balanced melange of rich, malty caramel, praline and toasted tree nuts. Finishes crisp and brown-sugary with a parting kiss of vanilla. Unusually excellent one-off brew by Terrapin and Schmaltz. Bottle courtesy of biggsbowler!

GuilTTy (2264) - Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA - DEC 10, 2011
On tap at the Pourhouse in Westmont, NJ. Deep dark espresso color with faint reddish highlights and a thin medium tan head. Aroma of sweet cocoa syrup. Rich chocolate milk flavor right up front followed by a hint of dark fruit and vanilla. A steadily building cayenne chili burn starts about midway through the fourth sip and sticks around through the semisweet chocolate, slightly bitter finish.
