Reunion - A Beer For Hope 2012 (Shmaltz Brewing)

RATINGS: 139   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.56/5   SEASONAL: Special   EST. CALORIES: 240   ABV: 8%
Teaming up with Terrapin Brewing Co. for the second time, Shmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’12. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in the venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle to Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (

This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and cinnamon. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle cinnamon aroma. Complex malt overtones quickly give way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

Opaque black - brown beer. Good head but an odd muted off tan colour. Dry palate, a little crisp. Mild minerals. Bitterish chocolate and a trace of coffee. Sweetish vanilla and a pinch of cinnamon. The dominant taste here is bitterish chocolate. Finishes fresh and semi dry. Nice list of ingredients on this beer but overall they not brought together in a cohesive whole. Getting to be hard work.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of fiulijn. Pours a deep dark brown with a vague tint of orange and a creamy beige head. Cloyingly sweet vanillaish milk chocolate aroma. Medium body, dry and dusty cocoa powder with a rather bitter, roasty finish. Not really a favourite. 230213

Dark brown color, the head reduces quickly. The aroma is like perfume, talc, artificial vanilla. Dry mouthfeel, highly carbonated; cheap chocolate flavor and artificial vanilla; some roasted malt, and accentuated bitterness.
Odd. Not my kind.

Pours a dark brown color with a finger of khaki head. Lots of cocoa, vanilla, and milk chocolate in the nose. There’s a slight chili pepper aroma and heat along with a touch of raisins. Just a mild earthy note on the nose, too. Maybe a hint of roast and coffee. The flavor is full of sweet molasses, marshmallow, cocoa, and fudge. There’s a touch of raisin fruitiness, a light pepper/spice note, and a touch of vanilla. The mouthfeel is really nice and creamy, too.
