Sample at the Blarney Wine tasting on 03/16/2013: The beer pours a hazy mahogany color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Boozy aroma with malt and vanilla notes. Full, syrupy body with flavors of earthy malt, rum and wood. The finish is sweet with a rum and oak aftertaste. Pretty good overall. Like so many revolution beers, I feel like I really should like it. . . and I don’t like it nearly that much.
This one is all barleywine, from the first overpowering sniff, and like any good barleywine I do expect it to slap me around a bit.
But this one does the slapping in a kind of unrefined, syrupy manner. It really is just too sweet and syrupy-- both in flavor and texture.
I suppose the rum is what’s supposed to balance out all this fruity, syrupy sweetness. . . but it’s not working for me. I like a high alcohol brew and generally don’t blink till they get north of 10% . . but this one just has too much alcohol taste for me.
So, it’s ok, but whereas every year I will continue to look forward to Bigfoot. . . this one I could miss. crossovert (14134) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 20, 2013
650bl bottle purchased at he recommendation of my boss. Pour is a brownish red, not the most inviting beer in appearance. Smell is rum, pears, oak, caramel, and perfumey booze. Flavor is more of the same. A super-malty barleywine with a boozy, oaky rum tone. I like it as a sweet beer. Burning alcoholic palate which I like. jbickus (16) - Illinois, USA - MAR 10, 2013
Smell is of rum, sweet candy, sugarey. The taste is like you are drinking a beer straight out of a mango. Very sweet, fruity, almost like a Parrot Bay Rum. Palatte is fairly smooth, with a syrupy mouthfeel. Really interesting and different. deyholla (12588) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - MAR 10, 2013
Bottle thanks to Sarah! Pours a near clear deep amber brown with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has caramel, toffee and sweet grains backed by a nice rum note. Flavor has a nice combination of caramel, toffee and rum/oak backed by sweet grains.

Tap at Kedzie Brewery, snifter: Beautiful mahogany hue leading towards a bright amber bottom, small creamy head and good lace. The aroma has notes of brown sugar, rum, honeydew, plum, wood, earthy yeast and a slight peppery edge. The taste is very BA Barleywine-ish with heavy dark fruits and sugars rounded out by earthy and oak notes. Moderate rum character but overly sweet nor cloy. Alcohol helps cleanse the palate which is oily and has a warming finish. This is very nice, good sipping beer. pantanap (3367) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 9, 2013
Taster pour also had during their anniversary party... Pours a semi-transparent mostly hazy coppery amber hue and topped with a lighter shade of beige, gently reducing down to a wispy film...aroma of dark fruit vanilla coconut and boozy spirit. Sweet and boozy but generally nice and satisfying. ... Flavors are nice albeit pretty warming and boozy with an emphasis with dark fruit, banana, and a coconut vanilla-ey barrel presence where the rum adds a bit of a dark fruity essence. Semi-prickly carbonation with a somewhat fuller body overall. The flavor profile is enjoyable but its a bit in your face for the most part. A sipper but a nice one at that. jcartamdg (3539) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 7, 2013
Pours a caramel brown with no head. Aroma of caramel, vanilla and honey. So sweet, rum and vanilla. Medium body really nice.
