To commemorate our 3rd year anniversary we brewed this hearty wheat barley wine with piloncillo sugar and aged it for 4 months in Appleton rum casks. The result is something special; layers of caramel, molasses, toasted malt, oak and warmth. Cheers!

22oz bottle poured into a Rev sampling glass. Apparently, this is a year old. Hazy dark amber color with visible carbonation. Aroma is as expected, strong sweet raisin malt, lots of alcohol. Even a good deal bit of rubbing alcohol coming through, maybe that’s the rum. Flavor is similar with maybe less rubbing alcohol. Eh, long sweetness.

Brown to burgundy body with a soft, light beige head. The aroma offers booze, sugars, raisins, toffee, oak. Sweet breads and fruit soaked in booze. Maybe some cotton candy. Apples and rum in the finish. Lots of big flavor, but perhaps this would mellow out a bit with age. Overall, pretty good.

Sweet malty. Honey. A lot of sweet flavors, but not too sugary. Good stuff, though.

Draft at the 3rd year anniversary party. Will have to re-rate a bottle in a few months. Pours a hazed orangey gold with a sticky white head. Nose is big. Faint citrus and a hit of molasses, rich malty sweetness and booze. Sharp alcohol in the nose overall. Clean fermentation, though. On tasting, it is on the hot side with aggressive alcohol prickling the palate. Could use a touch more body. The rum notes are more subdued on the palate but do offer some raisin notes. An interesting beer that should mellow nicely in the bottle in a few months time.

Pours a caramel brown with no head. Aroma of caramel, vanilla and honey. So sweet, rum and vanilla. Medium body really nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Taster pour also had during their anniversary party... Pours a semi-transparent mostly hazy coppery amber hue and topped with a lighter shade of beige, gently reducing down to a wispy film...aroma of dark fruit vanilla coconut and boozy spirit. Sweet and boozy but generally nice and satisfying. ... Flavors are nice albeit pretty warming and boozy with an emphasis with dark fruit, banana, and a coconut vanilla-ey barrel presence where the rum adds a bit of a dark fruity essence. Semi-prickly carbonation with a somewhat fuller body overall. The flavor profile is enjoyable but its a bit in your face for the most part. A sipper but a nice one at that.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a deep amber colored body with a bit of an orange hue. Finger-width, creamy, light brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is rich caramels with some wood, hints of molasses, and a nice rum note. Touches of toast and a light fruitiness. Flavor is similar. Rich caramels with a bit more of a molasses sweetness, wood, some vanilla, and a nice rum note. The rum gives off a slight fruitiness and really adds a nice complexity to the rich caramels. Finishes dry and somewhat woody with a deeper caramel, some toast, a light woody spice, and a pleasant rum note. Just barely a hint of alcohol warmth before leaving a lengthy aftertaste. Fuller, somewhat sticky body with a creamy, light carbonation. Overall, this is pretty impressive. The rum barrel adds a nice complexity to the big caramel malts without overpowering the base. Really well done anniversary beer.

Draft at Standard Market. 10 oz. glass for $6. A deep, cloudy, murky brown. Lacy, thin strings of foam. Smell is rather light; no heady alcohol. A bit of fruity ester. BUT the taste is indeed big. Thick mouthfeel like a raisin syrup with a slight bit of cherry. Rum is very much in evidence, but hovers in the background. Despite the warming alcohol and thick mouthfeel, it’s not overbearing. Hops only serve to offset the sweetness, unlike a Bigfoot. A lot like a sherry, with a little rum to the rear. The 10 ounces is quite more than enough, thank you. So hard to do more than just sip this wonder.

Slightly dark amber pour, little to no head. Big spicy rum nose. Beautiful sweet malt profile, nice spice and heat from the rum on the finish. Really nice Barleywine, certainly on the sweet and boozy side.

From notes. Draft. Damn, this is good. Brown sugar and wood with dark fruits and some vanilla. I would love a bottle to bring with.
