3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a deep amber colored body with a bit of an orange hue. Finger-width, creamy, light brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is rich caramels with some wood, hints of molasses, and a nice rum note. Touches of toast and a light fruitiness. Flavor is similar. Rich caramels with a bit more of a molasses sweetness, wood, some vanilla, and a nice rum note. The rum gives off a slight fruitiness and really adds a nice complexity to the rich caramels. Finishes dry and somewhat woody with a deeper caramel, some toast, a light woody spice, and a pleasant rum note. Just barely a hint of alcohol warmth before leaving a lengthy aftertaste. Fuller, somewhat sticky body with a creamy, light carbonation. Overall, this is pretty impressive. The rum barrel adds a nice complexity to the big caramel malts without overpowering the base. Really well done anniversary beer.
Bottle shared by "hannont". Colour...very cloudy amber with a thin ecru head. Nose...incredibly boozy (rum of course) with oaky notes and vanillin. Palate...sharp, pungent and rummy with gobs of dates and dark brown sugar. The whole palate feels thick and cloying and the alcohol provides a continuous warmth. The finish is long, oaky and boozy. djd07 (14471) - Houston, Texas, USA - MAR 9, 2015
Bottle during RBWG Lobby Share. Pours a cloudy copper with small beige head. The aroma is caramel and brown sugar. Medium mouth with dark fruits, brown sugar, very sweet, good. hopscotch (11078) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - DEC 9, 2014
Bottle... This beer rocks!… Pours hazy, dark and burnt-orange with a small, fleeting, off-white head. The aroma is fruity and malty with vinous esters and heaps of gooey caramel. Full-bodied and velvety with gentle carbonation. The flavor is boozy and rich, offering sweet caramel and esters of fortified wine – possibly cream sherry. Creamy, malty, über-warming finale. Kudos to newcigarz for sharing this world class beer! alexsdad06 (10389) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 3, 2014
Draft at Dutch’s Feb. 2013 notes. Pours a slightly hazy orange amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet caramel malts, lightly toasted bread, some fruitiness, rum barrel, slightly boozy, golden raisins, wood, molasses. Solid stuff, I have a bottle I should try soon. beastiefan2k (3981) - HdG (past: NYC, KS, Rain City), Maryland, USA - APR 27, 2014
22oz bottle poured into a Rev sampling glass. Apparently, this is a year old. Hazy dark amber color with visible carbonation. Aroma is as expected, strong sweet raisin malt, lots of alcohol. Even a good deal bit of rubbing alcohol coming through, maybe that’s the rum. Flavor is similar with maybe less rubbing alcohol. Eh, long sweetness.

I didn’t realize this was aged in rum barrels and was quite relieved to find I was not insane when I found out it was. This stuff fairly well reeks of white rum. I like rum fine and all but I do like a little more beer character to come through in the finished product. This is a clear brown brew that pours pretty much headless in the glass. There is maybe a bit of bubblegum and caramel to go along w/ the slightly medicinal rum character but not much else. I like big, boozy barrel aged beers but both the beer and the booze seem to be sub-par in this case. pete4999 (1445) - Buffalo, New York, USA - APR 25, 2014
Bottle, dated January 2013. Poured a deep dark brown. Had a little bit of a sweet feel to it, slightly boozy but not overly so. Big caramel notes. I can’t recall having a rum barreled beer before, so I’m not sure what to compare it to. Nice beer though. fitwitchik (433) - Ohio, USA - APR 15, 2014
Poured from an over an year old bomber into a Revolution Brewing Company glass a dark red amber with a thin head
Aroma is boozy sweet-thinking rum vanilla & prunes?
Flavor is straight up molasses & rum here with some toffee caramel.
Balance creates a smooth satisfying finish syrupy malted sugar.
Have had this 4 x over past year including on tap @ Revolution. Age makes this a superb BW!! cernjoh (183) - Ohio, USA - APR 15, 2014
Poured a 14 month old bottle into a Revolution pint glass. Was a clear red amber with a 2 finger light tan head. Aroma is caramel, vanilla, and rum. Taste is a slightly hopped caramel rum and vanilla goodness. Palate is good and smooth with nice carbonation. Overall an excellent American Barleywine. xxthedudexx (3) - - FEB 9, 2014 does not count
Tasty beer but not digging the rum aroma and the aftertaste is alright. I definitely prefer straight jacket for rev barleywine
