Revolution Barrel Aged Institutionalized Barley Wine

RATINGS: 142   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.92/5   SEASONAL: Special   EST. CALORIES: 390   ABV: 13%
In November of 2010, we filled 1 Jack Daniels and 1 Heaven Hill Rye Whiskey barrel with our Barleywine (Institutionalized). The combination of these two unique barrels yield a very rich and complex finished product. Deep aromas and flavors of dark stone fruits, bourbon, molasses, toasted coconut and vanilla come in waves as you swirl this beer in the snifter.

Future releases, especially the first bottle release saw this offering aged exclusively in Woodford Reserve barrels. This is noted for the 2012 December Release, but will not be seperated out.

Hazy dark amber color with tan head. Aroma has really nice bourbon, butterscotch, caramel and a bit of burned sugar. Taste starts with sweet bourbon, some dried dates, brown sugar, quite complex, tasty, not overpowering in any way. Syrupy body, low carbonation. Overall its a great barleywine with a really nice bourbon flavor.

Bottle shared at a tasting. Dark caramel pour, semi-hazy, with a tan head. Notes of sweet bourbon, caramel, sweet raspberry and prune jam, dried fruit, whiskey. Nicely balanced, the flavour unfolding as you drink. A great barley wine.

This draft brew from a beer bar was served at a cool temperature and poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized brown colored bubbles that were quickly diminishing and left behind no visible carbonation semi-opaque dark ruby red brown colored body and a very good lacing. The mild aroma was vinous malty and alcohol. The smooth thick mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering vinous aftertaste. The yummy flavor contained notes of brown sugar semi-sweet roasted malt and mild hops. A wonderful best in class brew.

Tap. Poured a dark ruby color with an average frothy tan head that lasted with very good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted malt, dark fruit and alcohol aroma. Medium to heavy toasted malt, dark fruit sweet flavor with a heavy dark sweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is standout beer.

Bottle at a tasting - thanks, Kevin! Known as Straight Jacket now. Relatively pale brown color with a large tan head. Aroma is caramel, fruit, berries, even a touch of berry tartness. Caramel, toffee, vanilla flavor, medium sweet. Medium bodied, light for style, carbonation on the higher side. Good but not worthy of the hype some have bestowed on it.

With Z, pours a maroon Amber pour with a beige head. Nose is oak, vanilla and whiskey. Taste is heavy thick whiskey with anoaky vanilla sweet notes. Ends on the very heavy whiskey notes, sweetly and dryly with a moderately long finish . A very nice sipper! quaff score 8 / 10
