COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November of 2010, we filled 1 Jack Daniels and 1 Heaven Hill Rye Whiskey barrel with our Barleywine (Institutionalized). The combination of these two unique barrels yield a very rich and complex finished product. Deep aromas and flavors of dark stone fruits, bourbon, molasses, toasted coconut and vanilla come in waves as you swirl this beer in the snifter.

Future releases, especially the first bottle release saw this offering aged exclusively in Woodford Reserve barrels. This is noted for the 2012 December Release, but will not be seperated out.

UPDATED: DEC 2, 2014 Pours a dark ruby with a half finger of head and nice lacing. Aroma is very boozy and winey. Absolutely amazing. It smells as if I’m drinking a glass of merlot. Taste is delicious. Red wine, plum and YEAST. Very sweet. The best barley wine I’ve had to date.

On tap, and labeled as Straight Jacket. Pours a deep, dark ruby color with a half finger of head. Had aromas of toffee, cherry, grape, plumb, and I got a bit of yeastiness as well. This beer is boldly sweet, tad bit of a hop bite, and slight alcohol burn. The alcohol is very well masked in this one. Really full bodied, and had a very thick mouthfeel. Lingering dark fruit aftertaste. I dug this one.

Bottle from lemonhead. Wow this stuff is special. Clear deep red pour with a thin fading head. Aroma was big booming notes of bourbon, caramel, vanilla and sweet fruit. Lots of booze. Flavors were oh so rich. Ripping layers of caramel and bourbon, sweet vanilla, woody slightly bitter finish. Decadent mouthfeel with sub par carbonation. Lingering bourbon finish. Best barley wine I've had, I think.

Échantillonné du Extreme beer fest 2014: Un barleywine définitivement facile à boire avec son vieillissement en barriques brillant, son alcool évanouie, ses tartinades de caramel et de marmelade et sa finale presque croustillante.

On tap @ Revolution!!! Wow...and I mean WOW!!! This one blew me away...dark plum-colored pour with slivers of mahogany, garnet, and copper sparkling through the glass. Small sphere of a head circles the snifter and stays consistent throughout the sample. Mind-blowing aroma shows off both barrels, Jack and Heaven Hill. Rich bourbon, vanilla, oak, molasses, and maybe even a touch of maple. Other rich flavors such as toffee, gooey caramel, and butterscotch find their way to the palate. You get the intense profile without the eye-watering ABV. Chewy and delicious!!!

Poured on tap into a snifter. About 1 finger of head. Surprising considering it’s a 13% barley wine. Aroma is of cherries and dark fruits. The first sip is of plum with a strong alcohol hit. Mouth feel is very smooth. Overall a very easy to drink barley wine.

Bottle of Straight Jacket generously shared by Dave. Aroma is figs, candied nuts, and brandy. Pours a solid red brown with a very small head. Taste is just fantastic. Sweet candied nuts, dark fruits, a good presence of oak barrel, and almost a roasty body. Perfectly balanced and not cloyingly sweet. This is just a perfectly made BA Barleywine. Underrated in my opinion.

Bomber. Garnet with a tan head. Huge nose of sugar, caramel, candi and bourbon. Similar flavors. Great.

Hazy dark amber color with tan head. Aroma has really nice bourbon, butterscotch, caramel and a bit of burned sugar. Taste starts with sweet bourbon, some dried dates, brown sugar, quite complex, tasty, not overpowering in any way. Syrupy body, low carbonation. Overall it’s a great barleywine with a really nice bourbon flavor.

I tried a sampler of this at the Revolution brewpub in Chicago. Very dark but not opaque and a bit of a light brown head. Smells dark and fruity, mostly of coffee. I was worried that this would be too sweet but it’s not cloying at all. I can taste coffee, bread, vanilla, dark chocolate, and a touch of coconut and dark fruits. Alcohol warmth is very pronounced. All the flavors are very well balanced; I’d definitely get it again.
