Quite smokey and roasty, but a bit too much taken over by the whiskey. This one would have been better blended back with some of the base. deyholla (11914) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - DEC 30, 2012
Sampled from the tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a creamy brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malt with a bit of smoke and backing barrel. Flavor has a combination of roasted malts and slight smoke with a bit of backing barrel. dinkle50 (1530) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 29, 2012
Dark pour with a single finger head. Nice lace. Aroma of vanilla and oak. Medium mouth. Taste is full of vanilla and hints of smoke. Some oak and hints of bourbon. I thought this would be smokier than it was. Not bad overall. Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - DEC 28, 2012
On tap at the Kedzie location. Also had this at FOBAB ’12 and remember liking it. Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, dark brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is pretty harsh up front with lots of wood, sharp smoke, and a bunch of bourbon-vanilla. Some richer chocolates behind the barrel as well as a light roast backing. Flavor is better, but still a bit much. Lots of bourbon and wood up front, but plenty of chocolate with a nice smoke and roast coming through. Some vanilla in the middle with a bit of a meatiness and a hint of dark fruit. Smoke comes out a bit more towards the end with lots of wood, bourbon, and chocolate. Dry, roasty, smokey, woody, and chocolatey with a bit of a boozy bourbon-vanilla. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium-full body and a light carbonation. Overall, I remember really liking this at FOBAB, but I was wasted by the time I sampled it. This time around when I’m a little more clear-headed, I didn’t love it as much. The aroma is pretty harsh throughout, but the flavor has lots of the smoke and rich chocolate that I liked in The Bandit despite the intense barrel notes. Not bad, but far from my favorite barrel-aged beer from Revolution. pantanap (3366) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 27, 2012
Snifter poured at the source... Tap yields a deep slick oily black consistency, less intense at the edges, and topped off with a thin medium khaki head... Boozy vanilla bourbon forward nose with not much of a smoke aspect to it. A little harsh and barrel forward... Semi-sweet hatred and smoked chocolate notes upfront, inky with a touch of iodine like a peaty scotch. Smooth at the very onset but quickly turns quite harsh and boozy. Lacks finesse and smoothly. Boozy with a sour mash aftertaste to go along with the scotch characteristics. Lighter than expected body with a semi-lively mouthfeel. A little watery to boot with a very thin finish. A little too astringent and abrasive and not to mention a body that just doesn’t mesh well.

Old rating - draft @ FoBAB. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of heavy smoke, chocolate, bourbon, wood. Smoked meat flavor balances against the chocolate and vanilla. Good stuff - can’t wait for more. NobleSquirrel (3438) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 12, 2012
Draft at Fobab. Pours black with a brown head that sticks around. The nose shows campfire, vanilla and bourbon. Soft chocolate mingles with smoked meats. Fair amount of oak here as well, spicy. On tasting, the smoke is still persistent and earthy. Meaty and solid. Cocoa and vanilla, some oaky astringency on the finish. Really solid stuff. Sampled at FoBAB 10 - 2012 (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich blackish coal pour, good haze, near opaque dark with small frothy tannish head. Aromas are smokey and iodine, peaty and oak, roast and toast. Gentle cocoa. Huge oak and peaty smoke. Oak, vanilla. Coal and ash. Initial medium bodied, bigger smoke is a touch of meat, seaweed. Gentle oak, ask, silky black malts. Vanilla, oak, gentle backend is more red fruit and woody smoke. Middle is toffee and toast, vanilla, and a bit of fudge. Toffee. Backend shows some smoke and ash, roasty. Some cocoa. Pretty solid, a bit offensive at first but grows in very well for a Smokehead like me. Can see others finding it a hard sell though.
