A striking, robust porter full of warmth and chocolate malt. Eugene is a robust porter named after Eugene V. Debs, an American union leader and activist who led the Pullman Railroad strike in 1894. An assortment of Belgian specialty malts form a complex structure of toasted grain and caramel flavors. Dark chocolate malt makes this porter black as night and infuses it with its distinct intense, chocolate essence.

Can from Sake Taniguchi (World Beer Market). Chocolate, roast malt, vanilla, light berries. Thick dark brown color, some tan lacing. Roasty initial, brown sugar, vanilla and light wood, sweetened coffee, and final extra twist of vanilla. Medium body, a little creamy. Pleasant and rather fruity for a porter. Really like that mid and final bit of vanilla.

Canned January 13, 2015.
Glass: New Belgium globe.
Appearance: Black body with a persistent frothy tan head.
Aroma: Aroma leans a bit fruity, perhaps oxidation, with some creamer aromas and a mixed malt aroma that gives a light savory sweetness to it.
Taste: Tastes a bit oxidized with milk chocolate and a dark chocolate finish. Not awful, but far fruitier than other porters Ive had.
Palate: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Pretty mediocre porter imo. It is far too fruity and lacking any richness I get out of Founders Porter, Eddie Fitz or Black Butte.

On draft. Black color with one finger off white head. Coffee and chocolate aroma. Really smooth, not too heavy coffee taste and really easy to drink.

Very dark brown color with a medium tan head - larger than most porters. Aroma: lost on my screwed up sinuses. Taste is dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla...and a sourness (not intense, but enough to overpower the other flavors) that I just cant place - cant imagine that its yeast. That sourness makes this not particularly enjoyable. I probably wont try this one again, even though my beer buddies say its a "decent, not great" one - too many other really good ones to have instead.

12 Oz bottle. Pours black with a big tan head. Nice, dark malt aromas of brown sugar, molasses, chocolate and raspberry. Flavor is sweet up front, with berry notes. Morphs to mild roasted malt character with nice coffee. Finishes with a velvety, bitter roasted linger. Full body with a thick mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Overall, a tasty Porter. Great aromas, but fairly simple flavor profile.

12oz can poured into a shaker. Aromas of coffee, grass, and caramel come through as well as a floral touch. It pours a dark, opaque caramel brown color with a tan, even, small-bubbled head. A thick ring with a sudsy surface is retained and a messy lace is left on the glass. The taste is a medium sweet and light bitter combination. The oily beer has a medium malty body with a soft and sudsy carbonation. Coffee, chocolate, figs, and plums come through on the palate with a floral, herb, and spice finish. Clean and fresh chocolate and grass notes stick around in the aftertaste. Overall, theres a noteable spice note that stands out (for a porter).
