A striking, robust porter full of warmth and chocolate malt. Eugene is a robust porter named after Eugene V. Debs, an American union leader and activist who led the Pullman Railroad strike in 1894. An assortment of Belgian specialty malts form a complex structure of toasted grain and caramel flavors. Dark chocolate malt makes this porter black as night and infuses it with its distinct intense, chocolate essence.

I’ve never had anything from these guys, and I’m always up for trying new brew. Can poured into a chalice. Pours a thick deep black, with just a sheet of lace on the top after what I thought was an aggressive pour. Bits of lace cling to the glass. The nose is full of roasted goodness: ground coffee, chocolate malt, toasted bread, and a kiss of sweet vanilla on the finish. Good hefty body. Chewy but easy to drink. Good bubble play on the palate. Big milk chocolate flavors all over this beer. Some mild roastedness rounds it out a bit. I’ve had far too many Porters that are heavy on the roasted aspect and it just wears on you, but this one is perfectly balanced, even erring on the side of a little more sweet. Some vanilla and almond noted as well. Really a stand out beer here. Were this available to me locally, I think I’d have regular stock of this in my fridge as my go-to dark beer.

12floz can, COD: 07.11.2017, $1.75 unit cost, pint glass. The aroma presents a twang on the usual dark roastedness one expects from a porter. As far as far appearance goes its a dark brown with a head that quickly recedes to a ring. Leathery, slick with molasses taste and a finish that sticks to the back roof of my mouth. It's not bad, but I enjoy many other porters more.

UPDATED: NOV 11, 2017 12 oz can. A deep dark mahogany color with a big toasty brown head. Aroma of coffee, nuts, earth, leather, vanilla, and root vegetables. Some earthy bitterness, molasses, unsweetened chocolate, and roasty flavors. A bit on the heavier side with some chalkiness. Good porter.

Can from Binny’s Lincoln Park. Deep brown colour, rapidly vanishing head. Quite a sweet, malty porter. Low bitterness. Small hint of vanilla, some nuts, a bit of toffee. Hint of acridity in the finish. A bit heavy and slightly boozy. Lacks drinkability.

Pours dark coffee brown with a substantial, foamy, light cappuccino head. Nicely aromatic - roasted grains, chocolate, slightly sweet. Tastes of coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, with a faint hint of hops in the finish. Definitely on the sweet side. Palate has nice mouth-feel, with a light creaminess. Overall, very American Porter, featuring the sweeter notes, with barely a nod to the part sour heritage - nice beer.

Tap at Pour House. Semi-opaque Pour. Brown with Ruby highlights. Roasted grain aroma. Nutty. Some caramel notes. Sweet flavor. Nutty character, caramel malt. Dried leaves. Finishes light but toasted. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
