Pours a dark chestnut brown color that’s almost pitch black and opaque in the glass with faint mahogany edges. Two finger frothy off-white head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Excellent retention taking a while to settle and coating the glass on the way down.
Intensely smokey aroma with burnt hickory and robust, deeply roasted dark malt notes. Strong campfire presence with charcoal, butane, ash and barbecued bacon. Really meaty and smokey with some roasted coffee and sweeter dessert-like malts underneath. Liquid smoke, charcoal, barbecue pit along with bitter coffee grinds, dark cacao and sweeter dark malt notes. Hints of caramel, toffee, lighter chocolate sweetness. Smells great with a very pleasant heavy smoke character.
Full body with a strong smoke flavor but it’s not quite as prominent as the nose suggests. Still, it dominates the palate with hints of liquid smoke, charred meat and charcoal followed by robust roasted dark coffe bean, oatmeal and bittersweet dark chocolate. Some lighter malt sweetness comes in for balance but it’s dominated by roast and smoke. Delicate light chocolate and toffee sweetness but the heavy roast and prominent smokiness overtake really stand out. crossovert (12918) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUN 1, 2014
Draft at Kedzie. Dark brown pour. Smoke dominates the smell with a hint of cocoa and roasted malt. Flavor is smoky with some tartness and a bit of ash.the mouth feel is quite light for a stout. deyholla (11600) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - MAY 26, 2014
On tap at the brewpub. Pours near black with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges quickly. Aroma has a light smoke roasted malt a bit of dark grain backing. Flavor has some smoke dark grains with a bit of roast and a touch of sweetness. jkwood04 (5448) - Connecticut, USA - MAY 11, 2014
Sampled at the brewpub. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma of roasted and smoky malts, coffee, a light bitterness, and light dough. Flavor a nice blend of it all. Average texture. A cool smoked stout. hayduke (5204) - Eureka, California, USA - MAY 9, 2014
Sampled at the brewpub in Chicago. Came in the glass jet black with a small beige head. Nose of roasted pork, ,Medium body. Flavor is smoky with citrus hops.. This is a very good smoked beer and not like licking an ashtray like all too many. Love this kind of beer when it is done this well. Very good..

Sampled at the brewpub. It poured a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma was of pork and smoke. The taste was similar to the aroma with some nuttiness and malts. Tasty. Strykzone (7356) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - APR 27, 2014
Sampled at the brewpub. Black with a beige ring. Some red in there. Campfire smoke and ashtray aroma. Tons of maltiness, too. Anise? A thick substantial feel. Meaty smoked ashy. All kind of those going on. A little citrus hops deep down underneath. I am not a fan of this style but do like this. Travlr (24745) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - JAN 17, 2012
Draft at the source. Almost black, beige head, solid lacing. Aroma of burnt toast. Taste is similar, with a bit of ash. Nice. 17thfloor (2443) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 16, 2012
Fantastic beer. Perfect body and balance of smoke, light fruitiness, ash, burnt rubber, so drinkable with great carbonation, this is a winner for sure. Newk (299) - - JAN 8, 2012
had on tap at revolution. Poured into a pint glass with a solid dark brown color.
good aromas of smoke, toffee, spices and malts. nice depth, but while there is a smoke aroma it isn’t as defined as you’d want a smoke beer to be.
medium bodied with a really good feel. The smoke flavor is there again, but not as prominent as I expected. It is well balanced with flavors of toffee and caramel as well
If there was more of a smoke flavor to this, it would be a lot better. This does have a really good feel and was very easy drinking
