2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Rheineck gets mocked a bit in NZ because it is only 3.5% ABV. But for those who have spent a summer afternoon drinking a few glasses of Rheineck, perhaps while watching some test cricket, this beer is a real treasure. It really does have a pleasant taste.
From old tasting notes. Crystal clear bright gold hue with a foamy white head.msweet malt and hop aroma. Sweetish malt flavor has light hop crispness upfront. Thin watery middle. Brief tangy finish. Starts off good but fades quickly. hachiroku (8) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - JUN 3, 2017 does not count
Can, drunk straight therefrom and also poured into a glass. Pretty dire cheap lager from NZ that’s been around for yonks. Despite the name there’s nothing vaguely European going on here. The colour is ok although it’s overly fizzy and pours with a lot of head. Taste to start with is quite sweet with some notes of caramel, aftertaste has savoury hints of bread and some vege extract. The smell isn’t up to much though - it’s hard to tell it apart from the can. I would recommend chilling this bad boy to the max before serving so as to kill the flavour. Certainly not the worst beer I’ve ever had though (that ignominious award goes to Kingfisher Strong) so give it a go if you’re a penny pincher who wants a session lager. Sensational brew, its an amber stump I could polish any day of the week. Weddings, funerals, bbq’s or just the 5 o’clock knock off its the beer of choice. Cheap too so put a neck out and not ya pocket! TedE (1386) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - SEP 16, 2016
Can into glass. Clear amber beer with bubbly white head. A few tiny bubbles. Good body for 3.5%. Sweet malt taste, slightly vegetal finish. Super cheap NZ supermarket beer. Not horrible but really only for those who value price over quality. heyzoos (1) - NEW ZEALAND - DEC 10, 2015 does not count
I will give it a 3 for appearance because, well, it looks like a beer. Apart from that if a frog, a goat and a monkey vomited into a cup I would rather drink that than Rheineck. The Aroma is completely flat and indistinguishable from pond scum. The taste is acrid, sweet and almost poison like. The palate is completely undesirable and hard to remove even after three or four glasses of water. I recommend that you avoid unless you want to experience a truly horrible beer so that any subsequent beer tastes like the most finely crafted beverage in comparison.

I really am getting nostalgic here. Apparently this is still available, just like measles and cod liver oil. If someone offers you this, you should tell them you’ve joined AA and have to stay off the beer. Anything that calls itself a lager and talks about cold filtration obviously has no other redeeming features. waiake (606) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - JAN 15, 2015
330ml can haven’t had 1 of these for 20 years, pours pale with a malt grain straw aroma, the taste is similar very mild bit watery sweet drinkable just, heard these sell well in China mkel07 (6195) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - AUG 10, 2014
Can from The Beer Cellar April 2013. There is absolutely nothing nice at all to say about this beer. One of the more horrid beers I’ve had in a while. DylansDad (649) - North Shore, Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - APR 8, 2013
Smells like it finishes: a mixture of cereal, sugar and vegetable cooking oil. In the old days I could never drink more than one or two of these, the over-sweet oily gunkiness just gums up your works. Mutante (4) - NEW ZEALAND - MAR 23, 2013 does not count
One of the worst beers in the known universe. I’d actually rather be waterboarded with the hated Tasman Bitter in a disease infested secret prison cell rather than consume this muck. If you ever go around to somebody’s house and they have this inexcusable product in the fridge, shun them.
