Any porter requires complexity of malt and yeast flavours without excessive bitterness. We use a mixture of Maris Otter variety pale ale malt, pilsner malt, crystal malt, amber malt, black malt, roasted barley and malted oats. Porters, even imperial ones, are not a hop driven style of beer so the aim is to produce a simple clean background bitterness using traditional varieties like Challenger, Golding and Progress.

Hermod's rating

   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 3/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 14/20
Hermod (8350) - Vantaa, - DEC 6, 2012
50cl bottle. Bbe 01/2014. Almist black, thin head, that disappeared quickly. Aroma has roasted malt, dark fruitiness, berries and coffee notes. Flavor is roasted malt, sweetness, coffee, licorice. Light roasted, quite sweet and light bodied for this high abv. Drinkable, easy but lacks depth and complexity.

nihtila (3913) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - MAR 25, 2015

Christos (5889) - Arnhem, NETHERLANDS - AUG 30, 2014
(Ridgeway Imperial Porter) Bottle 500ml from Hermod, thanks! Poured into a snifter, ABV 8% Dark brown on the body, small an thin, almost frothy tan head, with low retention. Minimal lacing left behind. Aroma of light chocolate, oats, some liquorice. Taste is a bit better, roasted malts, chocolate, oats, the alcohol a bit notable on the finish, mildly bitter aftertaste. Medium thin body, much thinner than I expected from the alcohol level, low carbonation too. Overall okay, nothing special.

joergen (29216) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - JUN 13, 2014
Bottle in a hotel room in Helsinki. Dark brown coloured with a medium sized beige head. Sweet and light roasted aroma of caramel and licorice. Roasted flavour of caramel, licorice and bisquits. Light roasted finish.

Marduk (8404) - Reval, ESTONIA - JUN 7, 2014
500ml bottle (shared by FatPhil, thanks). Very dark brown color. Tiny to almost no head. Orange peel, nettles, thistle in aroma. Minerals, sweet, herbal, chocolate in taste. Tastes sit in different corners and don’t want to communicate to each other. Flat. Soft to medium carbonation. Minerals in aftertaste. Nah, not doing it for me.

FatPhil (17080) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - JUN 6, 2014
500ml bottle (Alko Arkadia, Helsinki)
Sweet caramelly aroma, but of roast, some zestiness even. Black, brief tan head. Feels flat in the mouth. Rough nasty burnt malts. Rotten and stinky again. Later, the aroma picks up the stinky aspects, not so good at all. Later I even get alcohol from the taste. Nope, this is not good at all, apart from the early look, but the head did flatten too quickly, and later it was even looking dull and flat, not sure it was even worth 4.

SperkeleForce (791) - FINLAND - MAY 30, 2014
Bottle 50 CL. Pours black with thin white lacing head. Notes of roasted, coffee, bread, chocolate.

Toomio (604) - Joensuu, FINLAND - MAY 30, 2014
Vähän hajuton, vähän mauton, mutta kuulaan musta. Raikas portteri. Kyllä toistekin voi juoda.

Tranquillity (2508) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - APR 25, 2014
No head, quite thick black body. It’s not a heavy palate, actually a bit watery. The aroma is quite good, with wood and coffee. Slightly bitter. The taste is not so full.

Finn (8155) - Tromsø, NORWAY - FEB 17, 2014
Flaske 0,5l fra Alko Muonio. Drukket i Skibotn 11 Aug 13. Ultradyp mørk amber. Nesten svart. Lavt skum som raskt går over i en tynn film. Beskjeden kaffearoma. Smaken sammensatt: Litt kaffe. Sjokolade. Godt integrert. Ikke påtrengende. Ettersmak av sjokolade.

TBone (18228) - Pori, FINLAND - NOV 18, 2013
Dark deep ruby color, tiny beige head. Aroma of bread and toasted, even burnt maltyness. Mediun-bodied. Caramel, licorice, light alcohol in the finish. Lowish bitterness. A bit like Baltian porters.
