Imperial Red Ale
"My goodness", muttered Claus, recalling his visit to the Institute, "the restrictive outerwear, the padded room-even padded Christmas tree ornaments. Horrifying! Yet the little chap seems happier than he’s ever been" Claus took a thoughtful sip of a most warming red ale. "Perhaps sanity is over-rated...Ho,Ho,Ho!"

330ml bottle (St. Urho’s, Helsinki)
Well, I’ve had all the other elves, and the stronger they get, the worse they get, so there was some tripidation here...
Deep amber, no head, though a bit fizzy. Really rich malty aroma, some caramel. Flavour of those herring and rye-bread snacks from eliel. Some alcohol, but not offensive, suspect rice adjunct. Rye really strong, very pleasant. Almost a belgian feel. Better than I expected.

"Vintage 2007". Aroma of caramel and reddish stone fruits. Clear reddish color with a white head that didn’t last. Medium body with fizzy/creamy carbonation. The flavor is caramel, fruity (cherry or berry), and a little alcohol. The finish is dryish and a woodiness tends to build. Not getting much hop. The heat starts to be noticeable. Something like sultana appears. Might be a bit of date. Doesn’t seem so dry as a bit ago. It’s a good sipper.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper with paperthin off white head leaving spotty lacing along the glass. The aroma is a bready malt and caramel. Thin mouthfeel with a pine and raisin malt. Hides the alcohol very well making it easy to drink. A very good barleywine from Ridgeway.

Bottle. Poured clear brownish copper color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy malt, dark fruit and small alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and lively carbonation. Moderate to heavy complex dark fruit sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate duration. This is a good complex beer.

argo0 (14127) - Washington DC, USA - JAN 17, 2008
(33cl bottle) Small beige head that almost wholly dissipates atop crystal clear amber body. Aroma is sweet, caramel, cherry, light raisin, grapefruit. Taste is treacly sweet, cherry, caramel, some alcohol, medicinal (cherry). Full body, some syrup, low carbonation. When I drive I assiduously avoid looking at trainwrecks, but with the Ridgeway Elf (and even Xmas generally) series, I find myself compelled to try each one, despite the near certainty that I’ll be disappointed. Sadly, no surprises with this one.
