COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Looking forward to a depressing holiday? Here is liquid consolation. This 8% bittersweet chocolate stout is the best you could hope for in these dark times. Come to think of it, considering how bad you’ve been this year, this little coal-black gem is more than you deserve for Christmas. Concocted by the vastly talented -- though, frankly, a little too cheery -- Peter Scholey, Lump of Coal will be hitting shelves and better pubs in November 2004.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2017 On tap @ BAJT. Very dark brown with a small tan head. Fruity and malty tones. Malt, fruit, coffee and hops. Medium body with a nice bitter fruity finish.

Pours brown with almost no head. Aroma is caramel, honey, roast, some barley. Taste is sweet, roast, caramel, toffee, light sour notes, dried fruits, soft metal, light sourness. Nice beer!

Copenhagen 8/5 2017. 50 cl bottle from Kokkens Vinhus. Big lump of coal on the label with the motto: "Much more than you deserve for Xmas this year". Pours very dark opaque brown with bubbly beige head. Settles as thin patchy layer of foam. No lacing. Aroma is not very intense but pleasant enough. Caramel, chocolate of the bitter variety, roasted malts and cocoa. Medium carbonation and surprisingly thin palate. Flavor is rather sweet. Followed by a medium bitterness reminiscent of bitter dark chocolate. Aftertaste is sweet toffee. A very Christmas-like stout. A bit on the sweet side- But What the Hell - It’s Christmas.

Pours a dark brown color with tan colored head. Roasted dark malts, earth, cocoa, and some coffee on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with roast and chocolately notes.

500ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with ruby glimmer and small, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Roasty, dark malty aroma, hints of dark chocolate, burnt caramel, liquorice. Taste is bitter, roasty dark malty, residual sweetness, a metallic touch, hints of ashes, coal, treacle, iron, blood, bramble, dark chocolate.

UPDATED: DEC 5, 2016 Draft at Bru Craft. Clear very dark garnet brown pour with an off-white ring and spots of lace. Feels a bit more like a malty Red Ale than a Stout. Dark red stone fruit. Currants. Plum pudding. Malted milk balls. Chocolate liquorice. Shoe polish. Faint smoky notes. Slightly glossy. Not extraordinary, but proves more complex when you sit with it.

The aroma is a little chocolate and a little caramel. Pours a dark brown with virtually no head and very good lacing. The taste is sweet/umami. The body is medium/light, the texture thin/watery, the carbonation fizzy/lively and the finish more abrupt. No bad maybe aged too long.

Bottle from World Market, Friendship Heights. Dark red brown body with thin tan head. Nose is sweet, malty, caramel. Taste is malts, very alcy, spices and dark fruits. Quite strong and not much of it convincing.

UPDATED: NOV 14, 2016 From tap; black with medium brown head; aroma is cacao, more toasted than roasted, chocolate; taste is medium sweet, dark malts, cacao, medium bitter, alcoholic spicy finish, no harsh roasted notes at all; creamy milky slightly watery mouthfeel with low to medium carbonation; reminds me of mousse au chocolat
