"Is it just my imagination," queried old Santa, surveying the scene, "or is my Elf only getting worse and worse every year? Whats next? Seriously Bad Elf, Ill wager. Mark my words."

This Very Bad Elf is one fine ale - rich, hardy, and flavorful, brewed to an original 1795 Thames Valley recipe, with a very special pale amber malt that is rarely used nowadays, and balanced by a modest addition of English Fuggle aroma hops. Eres to your elf!

Hazy dark copper with a thin bubbly/foamy head. Rich almond and nutty nose with a bit of blonde biscuit and grassy hop. Nice flavor with a gentle toffee and almond malt tone with very little grassy hoppiness. Lovely and very quaffable. Mild nuttiness on the finish.

At cellar temperature and into a snifter. Brilliant, deep, orange amber with light effervescence. Resilient white froth atop laces a mean weave. Smoky phenolics, burnt toast and rubber bleeds from it and tickles the nose, but is ccleaned up by honey sweet, toasted malts. Similar phenolic clap on the palate. Quite heated with a vinous, sherryish burn that lasts. Malty with cereal notes upfront and a light note of honey and zing of lemon. Body is medium light with soft carbonation. Has a nutty backdrop build after a few swills. Drinks ok, but lacks a punch or wow factor. (50cL, BB 14/08/16, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Bottle - pours carbonated copper with medium head. Nose of malt and musk. Taste is of stale malt, cough syrup, and hop. Not a fan. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From bottle. Clear golden color. Aroma is malt, corn syrup, and toffee. Taste is quite malty sweet, with corn, cereal, and an odd bitterness. Bitterness comes forward in the finish with the corn syrup maltiness.

Bottle at Appellation Comely Bank tasting. Appearance - deep toffee-amber in colour. Decent head. Nose - more toffee, a hint of biscuit and definitely some Christmas spices in there. Taste - again toffee and spices and a bit cloying if Im honest. Palate - medium bodied with a big creamy and sweet texture and a finish that is too sweet. Overall - this one falls between stools for me. Not strong enough to be a barley wine and not refreshing enough to be an ESB.

Greasy golden, visible carbonation and a neat ringed head. Sawdust and soft nutmeg before scraped banana skin nose. Clean enough, bit soapy and a bit herby. Clean, passable for the ABV but a keen carbonation. Clammy sweetness. Sleek enough but taste like a bitter on the linger over anything else.
