Pours an inviting dark brown color with a nice sized brown head. Lacing is excellent. Aroma is roasted malt and nutty. Very pleasant. Flavor is roasted malt, but not overly bitter for the style. Body is medium, dry, clean and refreshing. A good beer here. PullMeABeer (203) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - APR 18, 2004
Very dark for a lager, good start. Aroma was smoke, coffee, and dark malt. Taste was very malt and light, but ended a little sour. When I let the beer sit in my glass for a while it seemed to mellow and I enjoyed the last half. Steib (613) - Queen Creek, Arizona, USA - MAR 15, 2004
Deep head and dark like the night. Intoxicating malty, coffee aroma. Sweet delicate flavor. Not heavy on the palate but rich and lightly bitter. Chalk one up for another local beer. bigbeersrule (115) - USA - JAN 30, 2004
A very full bodied Schwarz beer, not at all like Kostrizer. More like a porter without the bitterness. I like dark beers and big beers and this one is very drinkable but like other Rio Salado German beer style beers it is missing the crisp distinctive German character. dankitydancer (58) - Arizona, USA - NOV 15, 2003

Not much in the way of aroma, malty, head gaveway pretty quickly. Flavor: roasted malt quickly gave way to sherry-like, slight sour finish.Much better black beers out there. FlacoAlto (4220) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - AUG 18, 2003
A deep, deep black color, completely opaque, with a nice brown creamy head. There is a burnt slightly sweet aroma. This beer has a nice full body with a nice roasted character. The roasted malt has been well used, nicely roasted without the bitterness that can sometimes be derived from dark malts. Fairly nice clean lager taste. The clean taste is a great vehicle for the roasted malt character. A light bitterness finishes this beer off. The fullness and thickness of this beer is very nice. As the beer warms up one can get a bit of diacetyl, which is the only flaw in this beer, though a minor one.

Solid black color; as it should be, with a sliver of ruby brown at the very bottom, thick tan froth about one finger high, fades slowly to a fine skim always present and ink blot lacing.
Smell is a great dark roasted ambiance of black malts with a touch of chocolate, very roasty and darkly so. Has some musty dirt and earthy sweetness in a hop sense a slight note of espresso also noted.
Taste is a whole nother gear of exhubantly roasted black malts that tingle the tongue with very tangy sweetness and bewitches at hints of some kind of fruit I cannot distinquish. Mild mango, vanilla, soy sauce, chocolate, with molasses is my take on it and throw in a slight espresso taste just after the midway point. Very porter like with the hops, very rounded in tangyness and roastyness, lightly earthy and mellow bitterness. Fits in well with this perplexing yummy dark lager.
Feel is close to medium, a bit lighter with a nice midway grab and partially thinning and dryish finish of sweetness. A very good showcase to the style, I liked it, although its a bit sweeter then most but very good and quite interesting. hoped (18) - Arizona, USA - JUN 2, 2003
My first Schwarzbier. This opaque black brew crashes into my pint glass with a generous brown head. The aroma is sweet and smokey. The flavor is well balanced malt and hops but the first thing that roars out is the rich smokiness. Can you say chi-poht-lay? Reminds me of a fine smoked porter that I recently sampled-still trying to find those tasting notes. I feel cool and refreshed as the carbonation of this brew rolls over my tongue and drenches my taste buds. I never thought a dark beer could feel so cool. I think I am starting to hear the riff at the begining of that AC/DC tune.... Thunder!!! JohnC (3008) - Mission Viejo, California, USA - MAY 10, 2003
Black w/ a roasty flavor & medium body. I agree w/ beerguy101 that it's porterish, but w/ a lighter body. Lots of flavor.
