Note: this beer is now an amber ale, and the ABV has gone up from 4.5 to 5.5%. Special Ale is our flagship ESB. Its been with us from the start and hasnt changed since that first brew way back in 1996. Ample quantities of caramel malt give this English ale a soft copper hue and the colorful addition of carapils malt adds a slight sweetness you might mistake for honey.

Pours a dark amber with a weak off-white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is full of caramel with some butterscotch hints. Taste starts out with a warming sweet that quickly goes to a slightly bitter and dry finish - nothing overwhelming. This is a little thicker than one would expect. A nice medium mouthfeel with some carbonation. Overall, this is one of my regular beers. I would have expected to rate it higher, but the numbers work out. There is nothing exception about the ESA, it is just a decent beer.

I poured it from the bottle into a pint glass. It pours reddish amber with a beige head and lacing. The aroma is caramel, herbal, and earthy. The taste is caramel, earthiness, and slight hop bitterness. I thought this was a solid amber.

Tap. Pours amber with an off white head. Aromas of malt, caramel and nut. Flavours of caramel, nut, fruit, malt and hints of liquorice. Nutty and liquorice finish. The aroma did not tell what to come in flavour - which was highly drinkable.

Aroma: lots of malt and caramel with faint apple juice; Appearance: slightly hazy dark amber with thin, white head that hangs around; Taste: typical amber ale maltiness with some bready notes; Palate: medium body with long, sweet finish; Overall: its fine but not compelling. Probably wont buy again.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. The aroma is distinctly raisin cinnamon bread with a toffee undertone and peanut butter coming in late. Its a murky, unfiltered raisin brown color with a khaki head that has okay retain and only a light lace. Its a medium high sweet and light bitter blend. The texture is a a light syrup with a fuzzy carbonation and medium full body. Roasted flavors are picked up with tones of toffee, toasted bread, grains, and nuts. The finish is roasty and grainy with a driness and a light astringent quality. The aftertaste is grains, and lightly toffee.
