Old Sour Cherry Porter was not a beer that was planned, but one that has become a staple at Rivertown. This delicious disaster was born when it became apparent that the original intentions of brewing a Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter became compromised by wild yeasts and bacterias. Instead of dumping the barrel, we added pounds of fresh, tart, Northern Michigan cherries and Old Sour Cherry was born. A velvety, full bodied, complex blend of roasted chocolate malt and tart cherry, this is a beer that can be drank fresh or is capable of developing beautifully in the bottle for years to come.

Note: Labels may say "Old Sour Cherry Porter" or "Barrel Aged Old Sour Cherry Porter."

Tasted on 7/5/13 from a capped bomber bottle purchased at Grand Cru. Pours an almost completely opaque dark brown with an average tan head that slowly recedes to messy lace. The nose is sour and funky with some red wine vinegar, natural cherry aroma, and plenty of milk chocolate and roasted chocolate malt. The flavor is more sour cherry than anything else with a nice vinous note, some barrel notes, and plenty of porter-like chocolate and roast. The body is medium with average, smooth carbonation and a long sour cherry and roasted finish.

Bottle @ THT. Pours a deep dark reddish beer with a small, light reddish head on top. Aroma has lots of sour red fruits, cherries, bourbon on the background, applecompote and a big hint of Brett. Flavor is very stringent and tart, dry mouthfeel, lots of cherries in there, little to no bourbon, some tannines and a long dry tart aftertaste. Good stuff, whish there was more bourbon though.

sampler poured dark brown to almost black. no head. the aroma was sour cherry straight up. the flavor almost bit off my tongue. very strong sour cherry backed by roasted malts but the cherry is very predominant. it was almost to the acrid side of the spectrum one thought it was off putting and almost like vinegar...it was decent enough my buddy loved it.

BuckeyeBoy (8859) - Boise, Idaho, USA - MAY 30, 2016

Draft to taster at Jungle Jim pour cola brown with no head. Nose almost spoiled sour, tart cherry, and rubbing alcohol. Taste similar to nose with spoiled fruit. Alcohol mixed with malt. Don’t like it.
