It pours clear pale gold with a thin white head of foam. The aroma is Oude Gueuze Tilquin à l’Ancienne like with acidic citrus coming from a semi rich depth of lime and tangerine as well as a touch of hay and some sweetness. The taste is similar with soft acidic citrus notes like lime and lemon to go along with a tiny amount of residual sweetness. Along with those notes some hay and tartness and soft light vinegar comes to the surface to create additional depth. This is solid and refreshing and has a somewhat thin body making it even more sessionable. How has this come from Ohio?

Pours a nice clear amber from a bottle, aroma of a nice tart apple cider vinegar, musty basement in a good way. Very tart and musty in the best possible way. Bottle from a trade like 3 years ago. Lots of funky cheese and spice and pepper and earthy dirtiness. One of the better funky American beers I’ve had in a while. Some fruit, lemon. Banana and baked bread. Really entertaining. I have learned to leave a Brett beer for a couple of years. Does wonders for the complexity. Portrait: Un liquide dorée trouble avec une mousse blanche. Un nez de bois, de sauvage, de cidre et de citron. Une bouche acide avec de légères notes médicamenteuses qui ne compromettent en rien la qualité intrinsèque de cette bière qui aurait dû s’appeler Ville de Rivière au lieu de Rivere .
Cloudy orange, nice white head. Smells of lemon and cold steel. Very lemony flavor, with notes of vinegar and dust. dry finish. Very tasty.

Forgot to ask the vintage of this particular blend, but it seemed very young, so I assume it to be a recent batch. They do indeed blend a one and three year sour ale and, as far as the owner/brewer? said, do expose it to ambient yeasts in the brewery. Did not want to come across fanatical, so I didn’t ask if they do a turbid mash...
Anyhow, the beer pours a gently hazy, soft-goldenrod/bronze color with gentle carbonation and a large white head that slowly fades to cover.
In the nose there is a good deal of oak/wood and light lactic acid mixing with brighter, fruitier brett acids. Light band-aid, limeskin and a fair amount of cereal and honey-like malts in the background. Doesn’t have the deep, intense funk of stuff like Cantillon or some of 3F’s weirder lambics, but smells entirely enjoyable, nonetheless, with no diacetyl or strong acetic component (nor is it over-oaked or boozy).
When drinking lambics, I can’t help but immediately compare it to the best stuff out there, and while this has some shortcomings, namely no real heavy horseblanket, no strong lactic component and a bit too much sweetness, it doesn’t skimp on bright acidity mostly in the form of brett and cider-like flavors. The oak/wood character is done well too, adding noticeable tannin and oaky character but not going overboard on it. Strong, tight carbonation helps add to drinkability and despite 6.4% being a bit higher than average for a gueuze, it doesn’t seem to succumb to the looseness that the higher alcohol often creates in the body.
In the end, yes, it’s still closer to an American sour ale/wild ale, but for comparison’s sake, I liked this about as much or more than Resurgam, though they both are a bit too sweet, overall and just don’t have the profound flavor profile and developed funk that the real stuff has.
Terre, poussière, citron et cidre et chêne tissent les arômes et les saveurs de cette bière qui est davantage une sour/wild ale qu’une gueuze. Enfin, selon mon expérience avec le style. Anyway, pas mauvais du tout, plutôt facile à boire avec cette pointe de douceur et cette lichette épicée. Content de mon choix car cela aurait pu être catastrophique au cube.
