A nice looking head that dissipates over a few minutes. The aroma is of sweet roasted malts, coffee, wood notes, & hops. The flavor is very robust & malty. In addition the Black Perle has coffee and hop flavor. Overall the drink has a mild bitterness and isn’t too rough on the palate. shrubber85 (11408) - Greenville, Indiana, USA - JAN 4, 2013
Bottle. Chocolate, coffee, and charcoal aroma. Dark brown with minimal head. Sweet chocolate-caramel malt and moderately bitter orange peel flavor. Pretty tasty. AdamChandler (5052) - Enfield, New Hampshire, USA - DEC 17, 2012
Thanks Secret Santa! Pours and oaky dark brown. Black in the glass. 1 finger coffee coloured head. Nose is very roast! Lots of cocoa, chocolate, coffee. Smells more like a porter than an IPA. Taste is interesting. Loads of chocolate and fresh espresso beans. Hint of hop bitterness at the finish, certainly has that German hop taste. The roastiness is sticking around forever. Strong earthy aromas with subtle vanilla and oat notes. Completely solid black with no foam at all. Mellow bitterness from the hops accompanied by a subtle chocolate roast malt flavor. Some toffee and metallic notes on the finish. Overall, I am actually a little disappointed. I was expecting much more to it. It’s very basic and mellow. I’d give this beer a C rating. queenholly (3623) - South Whitley, Indiana, USA - DEC 9, 2012
Bottle courtesy of Suttree. Molasses, earthy sweet chocolate, black bread, and light alcohol aroma. Black with a moderate tan head. Earthy charred malt, bitter chocolate, piney hops favor. Medium body, moderate carbonation, dry finish.

Bottle; poured a dark brown with a big, frothy and persistent light brown head. Aroma of earth, caramel, sweetness, fruit, and flowers. Flavor was more roasted than earthy. NOt sure I am feeling this one that much, because it came off a bit heart. Very roasty and the earthy hops was not always the most pleasant. Ok. Bottle from Texas Liquor: It’s always nice to find a bottle that’s been wax sealed especially if it’s from an unknown to my knowledge East Coast brewery. Anyways here is the beer rating
Has a lush succulent scent of darkly roasted black malts that are accompanied by a deep boozy aroma of alcohol, however, any evidence of hops are minimal and would have had me fooled that this was a hybrid IPA. Flavor is robust with a rich base of dark chocolate/roasted malts with a slight tilt in balance towards a bitter taste of hop, however, I just don’t see this as a black IPA, but instead as a hopped up porter. Still tasty and satisfying none the less.

Black color with lasting rocky tan foam. Mild plastic aroma with chocolate, dark roast. light to medium body. Dark chocolate, medium roast malt flavors-not much here. daknole (11049) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - SEP 11, 2012
Bottle from storminorman. Nearly black, nice brown head. This is a pretty good black IPA, but doesn’t stand out much to speak of. Roasty, hoppy, chocolate. Finishes bitter, a tiny hint of plastic on the finish.
