Recommended by Jamie of the Wooden Keg. Pours almost black very dark brown hues with almost no head. Aroma of choc and a blend of hops malts, a little weak though. Not reminiscent of an IPA at all, it has a bitter chocolate flavor, nuts, some maltiness, Full body, soft carbonation, it has a long finish that is actually rather sweet. Gets better as it warms.

Nose is roasty with hints of chocolate and black bread. Hops are somewhat herbal, danky, and peppery. Dark brown, almost black pour with a creamy tan head that settles to a thin film and nice lace. The flavor is dark and roasty, a little nutty, a little chocolate and caramel sweetness, herbal hop bitterness, floral hops, and peppery bite in the finish. A little thin, somewhat dry, spicy, and maybe a little alcoholic.

From the bomber, it pours almost black with a light (in both color and volume) tan head. The aroma is of multiple semi-sweet/sweet chocolates, roasts, light spring flowers, some fruit, vanilla extract and hint of peat. The roasted flavors combine with toasted honey and toasty bread. Bitter hops finish the roasty pull, balancing out the malt substances. The finish is woody with some slightly burned peppery cocoa. The mouthfeel is smooth with a substantive body and complex, yet slightly alcoholic palate. It is not a "Black IPA"... it is, by the brewers admission, an Imperial Stout brewed with organic honey. A good American swerve on style, its bound to be pleasing to many facets of the palate.

What i am looking for in a black ipa is the balance between the hops and the roasted malt flavor. If this was a blind taste test, i would have called this a porter, no way would this be a black ipa. due to the style being so new, there are a lot of brewers right now coming out with black ipas that just arent. the roasted malts completely dominate this one with the ipas taking a backseat. great color, palate is fine, aroma is of a porter. so so in my book

The pour is almost black and opaque but just a bit of light comes through at the edge to reveal that this is a very dark brown with a tall, lasting tan head. Malty roast aroma with some chocolate with a touch of hops. An aroma that at first strikes me as one from a Porter rather than a black IPA. I guess it fits the new category description pretty well though. The flavor is slightly bitter, perhaps divided between the roast malt bitterness and the hop bitterness. Some sweetness that tastes to me like there is watermelon in here. Maybe thats the Perle hops Im tasting? T<he biggest thing about this beer is that I bought it in my hometown in the middle of beer wasteland. A little pricey at $12 tax included, but the fuel savings to the nearest beer city made it OK I guess.

Bomber. Dark brown, small lightly tan head. Looks really nice. Nose is roasted chocolate, slight alcohol, not a lot else. Pleasant, but not very zippy. Initial taste is a big dose of slightly bitter chocolate, leading to a little brown sugar and an ashiness that surrounds a nice, prickling bitterness. Just a slight citrus as it warms. Noticeable alcohol warmth finishes. Finish is mouth coating with some milk chocolate sweetness. Pretty decent, first half of the glass was really tasty, though the sweet chocolate and slight boozy finish were a little much towards the end of the glass.

Draft sample @ Brewvival on 2/27/10. pours a brown color with a quarter inch off white head... some dark hops in the nose but no where near what they advertise... generally a standard beer like their others... nothing to get excited about.... average finish with light hop notes....
