Bottle from Merchants. Aroma is roasted malt, nutty, earthy hops, slight metallic, slight maple sweetness. Appearance is dark dark brown, light brown head, I can see a bit of carbonation in the glass. Taste is nutty, roasted malt, pretty bitter, slightest maple, earthy hop, dark chocolate, like a mix between a Porter and Brown Ale. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, nutty roasted malt earthy hop aftertaste. Overall, this is an interesting brew. Sample via bottle at pour. Pours black, minimal head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted l malt, some light nutty notes, bit of sweet maple syrup. Body is light. Maybe it’s because it’s cold, but it drinks like 4.7, rather than 6.8%. Some nice roasted notes and pleasant chocolate, but not as much nuttiness. Feels like a porter. 12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/11/2015. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big chocolate, cocoa, maple, molasses, coffee, caramel, toffee, nuttiness, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, maple/chestnut, and earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big chocolate, cocoa, maple, molasses, coffee, caramel, toffee, nuttiness, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, maple, molasses, coffee, caramel, toffee, nuttiness, toasted dark bread, and and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, maple/chestnut, and herbal hop flavors; with a nice roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent American porter. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, maple/chestnut, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Pours a dark mahogany with a thin off-white head. Aroma is roast, chocolate, and some nut. Flavor is similar, with the nuttiness contributing to a bit of an off-flavor. The maple is undetectable, but that’s usually the case with maple. Not bad.
