Old Tom's label says "Barley Wine" but underneath it a tiny black sticker says "Style Ale" (importers?) This rather complex beer comes out of the bottle looking like black coffee...until you see the light hitting it and sending out flickers of lovely garnet red. Quite striking. The beer has medium carbonation and a small lacy tan head. Aromatics are not as malt saturated as you might expect and there's noticeable toffee, maybe chocolate and bark (licorice, or sassafras) or root-like characteristics. Nice, but subtle herbal hops and dried fruit, too. The mouthfeel is rich and silky, not syrupy, well flavored and very drinkable. The finish is pleasantly bitter and almost dry. Nice, but somehow not a home run.

Bottle shared with tderoeck. Many thanks! Dark brown colour. Sweet nose of marzipan, brown sugar, chocolate. Some tart and metallic notes.

UPDATED: NOV 3, 2017 Appearance: dark over brewed tea - no milk! - classic British barley wine. Aroma: chocolates, cakey nose. Palate: sweet, though not cloying, dried fruits, prunes, figs, fight pudding? Some bitterness adds balance. Alcohol? Not much despite 8.5 pc. Overall: well balanced. Will be laying a few of these down. Could it be improved? Yes bottle conditioned, maybe add some Brett at the end.

A touch harsh and over-fizzy, the booze and malts not quite gelling, but nice fruit notes and plenty going on between shifting dryness and boozy relief.

Clear red-brown beer, thin head. Odour is burnt toffee, malt and almost wine-y fruit. Complex malty base to it, slightly tangy fruit, burnt toffee again, a hint of chocolate in the finish which makes it feel a bit richer. Very drinkable... other than the strength!

Light brown color without head. Burnt malt with some hints of dried fruits, sweet taste with bitter sweet burn malt aftertaste.

0.33l bottle. Clear dark amber color with snall beige head. Aroma of burnt malt, caramel, whiskey and wood. Taste is bitter from burnt malt and little sweet.

Aus der Flasche im 2017-09 getrunken. Irgendwie eine leicht gehopfte Mischung aus ein Bitter mit leichter Frucht und ein paar Röstnoten eines Porters. Nicht schlecht.

Bottle from Sainsbury's, Team Valley, Gateshead. Very dark brown-ruby coloured with a thick white head. It has a wine like aroma, with dried fruit and plum flavours, hints of burnt toffee and caramel followed by sherry on the finish. Very good.

Rhombic (149) - Elx, SPAIN - SEP 12, 2017
Pours dark caramel, lovely tan head, deserves 4/5 beyond doubt. Aroma of caramel, malts, honey and dates. Lovely hoppy ending for such a smooth beer: dark malts prominent and a black tea to coffee flavour note before the aromatic hop ending. No hop bitterness. Oily with a medium-full body. Delicious.
