Originally labelled as Chocolate Tom. Label was changed to read Old Tom With Chocolate circa 2011.
Old Tom with chocolate is an indulgent rich combination of Robinsons’ award winning Old Tom and the finest cocoa. It is a superior full bodied strong ale filled with the flavour of ripe malt and velvety smooth chocolate teased together with an inspired touch of Madagascan bourbon vanilla.
Chocolate Tom is a deliciously indulgent addition to the Old Tom range, with a recipe developed by Robinsons and the renowned chocolatier Simon Dunn.
With a distinctive ’natural’ milky sweet chocolate palate balanced by underlying hop and roasted malt characters, Chocolate Tom is a superior, rich and warming speciality beer with a dark mahogany colour.

Bottle from beergium.com. Pours brown. Nose is chocolate, cocoa, orange peel, bloodorange, toffee. Taste is phenolic, chocolate, wood, kind of a weird hoppy aftertaste. Finish is bitter chocolate. Good, but not as good as the old Suffolk. I need to try the non chocolate version too.

Bottle pours brown with a off white head. Aroma of chocolate and some vanilla. Taste is chocolate.

Rating #1000. Mahagoni with no head. Aroma is phenols, clove, spices, chocolate, green apple, oak. Taste is sparkly spicy sourness with some phenolic sweetness and lots of alcoholic bitterness. Roast and cocoa in the dry finish. Full bubbled mouthfeel. Not easy to drink. Had the non chocolate version and thought it was amazing, so I thought this would make a good 1000. Didn’t enjoy as much as expected, though.

Potpuno bistro pivo. Bogatijom aromom. Kao da sam posjetio fabriku jeftine čokolade.

33cl bottle from Tesco. Pours deep brown with rich off-white head. Aroma strong in alcohol with sweet chocolate and vanilla, also wine. Sticky texture with quite a lot of fizz.

Enjoyed: Poured from a bottle into a trapist glass. Appearance: Deep red colour, with small brownish head. Aroma: Chocolate liqueur, alcocol. Palate: Medium body; light carbonation. Taste: Chocolate, but also slightly sour on tongue; sweet/bitter aftertaste. Overall impression: Quite ok but though I’m not a fan of sweet, I expected more.

Bottled. Pours brown colour with long lasting off-white head. Roasted malts, dried fruits and strong chocolate notes in aroma. In taste it’s pleasant chocolate first but then some strange acerbic notes appear that ruin the finish. Softly carbonated, light bodied.

2009 vintage - Chocolate Tom. Bottle from Tucker’s Maltings, Newton Abbot, Devon.
Into a tulip at cellar temperature. Muddy brown with a big ol’ yeast pack that settles to the base of the glass. Head is a good inch of tight off-white foam but fades rapidly. It’s mellowed on the nose (tried this fresh at the maltings in 2010). Hints of madeira and roasted walnut, rich timber and vanilla, and just a breath of milk chocolate. Chocolate icecream palate with ample savoury fruit mince not picked up in the nose. Woody and nutty in the finish with a lightly acidic tang and astringency that’s developed. Body is smooth, yet light and oddly sits quite heavy in the finish. The carbonation very soft to almost still. A hint of dark chocolate bitterness in the very depths. Alcohol is all but non-existent. Bready and doughy from the yeast but otherwise drinking deliciously. A pleasing brew at this age. By memory the 2010 bottle was a little one-dimensional towards chocolate. Lovely with a bit of age!

Clear deep chestnut brown with medium tan foam. Aromas of chocolate, sweet cocoa, truffles and tooffe notes. Palate, light body with lightly oily but thinish texture leaving smoky finish. Taste is sweet-ish with notes of very tosted brown bread, charcoal and cocoa. Overall, drinkable but for me it reminds too much of burned toast and I am not a fan of burned toast.
