Originally labelled as Ginger Tom. Label was changed to read Old Tom With Ginger circa 2011.
Ginger Tom is a lively breed indeed, a subtle snap of ginger creates lovely purring warmth for those cold winter nights, or a refreshing summer beverage when served over ice.
Specially brewed using an infusion of Chinese bruised ginger root and botanical extracts, this warming speciality ale has a pronounced ginger and spiced herb palate complemented by a sweet roasted malt dryness and wonderful ginger after burn.
Ginger Tom is a richly flavoured dark oak coloured ale with distinctive aromas of peppery spice and sweet ginger.

Dark brown/deep ruby color with large, beige foamy head. Medium to full body, soft carbonation, creamy lacing. Aroma of spicy ginger, hops, malts, toffee, spices. Taste is very gingery and moderately sweet, with accompanied aromas of dark fruits, dark bread, yeast, syrup, soda pear and some vanilla, licorice and alcohol. Unique and enjoyable.

Bottled. Dark mahogany colour with quickly disappearing head. I dont get much out of the aroma, only the ginger. In taste first comes the sweet ginger, followed by some bitterish notes. Sweet finish, light body and soft carbonation. Its like ginger was added to a bad ale to hide its flaws, but the original version is not a bad ale, so I dont really see the point.

ALLOVATE (2981) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JAN 13, 2017
2009 vintage - Ginger Tom. Bottle from Tuckers Maltings, Newton Abbot, Devon 2010.
At cellar temperature and into a snifter. Misted, cola brown with ruby in the shallows and a few solid proteins that sink rapidly to the base. . Head holds quite proud; a beige film of tight foam. Medicinal, deeply herbal and spicy nose with prominent earthy ginger root still showing. Topsoil, stewed rhubarb and plum, twiggy bark, mace and nutmeg. First sip brought along a lot of liquorice and aniseed in all its earthly forms. Mild heat in the earthy and deeply malty finish from the residual ginger. No oxidation but good age and amalgamation of nuances. Green peppercorn, dark plum and roasted cacao root with a blend of Deutsche aperitif (indefinable) flavours that tickle the olfactories and reside long on the palate. Body has a treacly viscosity but doesnt seem heavy in the swallow. Carbonation has waned to leave it smooth to oily. Ill go against the grain on this one. This has aged dynamically after a good seven years in the cellar. Pasteurised or no, it was great drinking, and reminiscent of the best of British ales that I miss. Loved this one..., as a vintage!! Bottle 0,33L. Dark mahogany red color with average big, frothy, light brown head. Aroma of bubblegum, orange, pear, pepper, ginger. Taste starts light sweet, slightly peppery (but not overhelming), finish is light sweet, too. Taste of ginger is a bit stronger at the aftertaste, but still acceptable for me. Light body, watery texture, soft carbonation. Im not a fan of ginger beers, but this one is ok for me.

Te original old Tom is one of my favourite beers, but this lacked everything that made it great. Thinner, less malty and complex and the ginger stands out too much (wheras the original blended all the flavours perfectly). No idea what made them make this 6% instead of 8.5%, but maybe ginger AND 8.5% ABV was too much. A decent beer just but nowhere near anything as good as the original

Leighton (20634) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 25, 2016
Bottle at home in London - picked up at the massive Tesco near Hackney Central, I think. This beer has a BBE of April 2013, so it definitely is getting long of tooth; tonight is the night, then. Pours clear amber with a creamy, khaki head - you cant fault the appearance. Lots of spicy ginger in the aroma, along with some gloopy, ripe berries and hints of toffee. Medium to heavy sweet flavour, thick and chewy, with lots of ripe berries, creamy toffee, dense slices of holiday fruitcake. Medium to full bodied, viscous, with velvety texture and creamy carbonation. Sticky on the finish, certainly sweet, with lots more ripe berries, fruitcake, moderate ginger spice, some orange peel. Well, it is certainly an interesting beer. The sweetness prevents it from being very drinkable, but it is definitely a novelty.

Bottle. Dark amber/brown colour, stable head. Aroma is sweet, caramel, lemon, ginger is not very forward. Taste is more of ginger, caramel, lemon, sweet and bitter. A bit too sweet for me. Overall not bad.
