COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Durban Pale Ale, was inspired by the original IPA’s produced in Britian and then shipped to India for consumption by the soldiers and bureaucrats. The IPA came via the Cape and records show that some of that beer made its way to the British serving in South Africa. With Durban then, as now, a major shipping port it is hard not to believe that barrels of IPA were happily consumed here on the East Coast, so we wanted to revive an old tradition. We only use the best malts for our Pale Ale, and in order to achieve our 5.7% ABV we need to pack the mash tun full of grains. The beer is also crammed full of hops to achieve the 40 units of bitterness that we want. We use Cascade hops since they don’t leave any lingering bitterness or harshness on the palate. The inclusion of Challenger hops provide the crisp, fruitiness characteristic of the beer, which is complimented by the special strain of English ale yeast that we use to ferment the beer. Our Durban Pale Ale is a strong beer and we have found that its character will change over time if cellared, producing an even more complex ale.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2016 500ml Bottle: Appearance: Pours a cloudy light golden with a minimal white head, good lacing.Aroma: Floral hops, sourness, hay.Taste: Medicinal, high bitterness, not pleasant.Mouthfeel: Medium body, low carbonation. Finishes very bitter and astringent.Overall: Not a nice ale, definitely infected. Happy to re-rate, but not on my account. Re-rated the beer, no difference I’m afraid. Perhaps it’s supposed to taste like that?????

Cask at the Pump House, Solihull. Poured a crystal clear medium amber with a thin white head and a few bubbles. The aroma is light malt hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with smooth light malt, light floral hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Became a little sickly after a while. Would not want to be drinking a pint of this.

Almost clear golden color with a fine white head. Malty, a bit citric and some weird notes in the aroma. Medium body. Moderate sweet and an ok bitterness. Malty, mild citric, herbal and some chemical notes. Not very good this one.
[On tap at Moon Under Water (JDW) in Watford, England]

Weak aroma with a pretty nice malty taste. Not so much hops. Nice creamy head and good looks doesn’t help much when the overall impression is slightly below average. Won’t have this again.

Bottle Jhb. Pours semi clear yellow light orange with medium head and carbonation. Aroma is hop with pine. Taste is hoppy bitter. Mouthfeel is light. Overall not as aromatic or hoppy bitter as my favourite IPAs but best of the robsons so far.

Gusher. Pours clear golden with a gigantic head that resemble washing foam. Aroma is floral hops, spice, citrus, some vinegar and some sour green apples. Mouth feel is round and fruity with spritzy carbonation. Aftertaste is green apples, vinegar, spice, some sweet malt, some metal and lasting hop dry finish. Overall: very nice. A lot of faults in this one. But, the faults actually compliment the beer. Well done.
