Chapter Three, our Fruit Beer, is strongly influenced by the monastic brewers from Belgium. We use both malted barley and unmalted wheat together with Hallertau and Saaz hops to create our base beer for our different seasonal fruit beers. While the European brewers may have a preference for Cherry beers we wanted to use only locally grown fruits in our beers. Depending on the time of year we will brew with either pineapple, strawberry, or more commonly the local mangos which grow throughout Shongweni Valley. We only use whole fruits to produce our beer, and we use a lot of it too, no extracts or flavourings here. This is always appreciated, not only by those who drink our beer but also by the lucky pigs who get a nice fruit supplement to their normal malt or wheat diet from our spent grains. The colour of the beer depends on the fruit that we use but all have a great natural carbonation and good head on the beer when poured. The beer has a low bitterness of around 20 units with an ABV of 3.5%.

Bottle at the Rake, 31 July 2009. Murky yellow appearance. Smells of pineapple (surprise). Quite sweet. Certainly not great but I didn’t find it as horrible as others did. Drinkable if not exactly enjoyable..

Bottle 33cl.
[ Courtesy of Magicdave6 ]. Unclear medium to dark yellow color with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, fully lasting, white to off-white head. Aroma is overriped pineapple, paper, rubber. Flavor is moderate sweet with a average duration. Body is light to medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft. [20090731]

2nd August 2008. Cloudy yellow white beer. Absoloutely vile! Watery pineapple with a big dash of soap. Worst beer I have ever tasted. Abysmal.

[email protected] Rake, thanks magicdave6. Hazy yellow colour, big fluffy white head. Aroma is harsh grains, earth, hops and quite bland. Flavour is quite medicinal, mildly grainy as well as some earthy and teasty notes. Mild fruityness as well.

Pale yellow with a lasting white head. Weak aroma of exotic fruits. Sweet and malty flavour with a touch of pineapple and a tart note.

Bottle at The Rake, Man Utd winning the Premier League May 2009. Possibly one of the worst beers I have smelt and tasted. Cloudy pale gold, thick white head. Possibly the worst chalky fruit beer I’ve had. Rancid pineapple, vegetal on aroma. Rotten veg. Quite comically bad.

A Mes rate: bottle from Quinns.
A very cloudy pale orange yellow with a very good white head and lace. Faint hint of fresh pineapple on the nose with a slightly infected wheat beer behind it. The trend continues in the flavour with some slight cardboard thrown into the mix. Very dry on the palate. Swift fruity finish. Despite my better judgement, I’m struggling to hate this...

rbesg07, bottled, grand tasting. pale yellow with a slim head, simple brown sugar and fruit salad aroma, quite mild with only the faintest hint of pineapple and no real bitterness

SilkTork (5926) - Southampton, United Kingdom, Hampshire, ENGLAND - JUL 2, 2008
340ml bottle from Beers Of Europe. Very yeasty in a muddy yeasty way. Dusty bitterness which is probably more yeast than hops. Very little in the way of fruit - any fruit, let alone pineapple. Not light, fruity and refreshing at all! Quite dreary and bitter. I love fruit beers, but this and the Mango have been real disappointments.

Ungstrup (38958) - Citizen of the universe, DENMARK - JAN 13, 2008
Bottled as Robsons fruit beer mild pineapple. An unclear light yellow beer with a thin white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of pineapples as well as light wheaty notes. The flavor is sweet wheaty combined with notes of pineapples, leading to a very dry and wheaty finish.
