The top product from the Rochefort Trappist brewery. Dark color, full and very impressive taste. Strong plum, raisin, and black currant palate, with ascending notes of vinousness and other complexities.

Dark ruby. Sweet malty and fruity aroma. Complex flavor; malt, syrup, fruit... all in perfect balance. Alcohol is well hidden, scary. Extremely smooth. One of the best beers Ive ever tasted.

Pours a deep black with nice head. Great aroma and flavors of malt and some dark fruits. very much like a barley wine.

I had this a while ago. It was very sweet and had flavors of raisins and coffee. It tasted like a barley wine with less hops. It was good, but not quite as much as I expected out of the most expensive bottle of beer I ever bought.

UPDATED: APR 4, 2008 WOW. Worth the hype. Grocery store mispriced a few so I picked them up for $1.99 a bottle. Id buy 10 cases at that price! Somewhat malty, aroma is excellent. Alcohol hidden well for 11% - somewhat spicy/sugary, flavors of orange peel, caramel, delicious. Mouthfeel is top notch, this is how every beer should be produced. Now I need to get my hands on a Westy 12...

Very subdued; no doubt a more experienced drinker will have a field day. For me, the prominent flavor was a very fine and clean flour. Almost zero sweetness, yet not biting or harshly dry; I appreciate how hard this is to accomplish. A very smooth, subtle drink.

I poured this into a nice chalice and the dark ruby beer perfectly filled it with the thick foamy head just barely pushing up over the edge of the glass. The aroma was primarily a malty sweetness, with hints of prunes and other dark fruits. The mouthfeel on this is great though. Its very rich and creamy and just slides down my throat. Most of the taste is malt and a residual sweetness as you might expect. There are also some spicy phenolic notes and the slight bite of alcohol. Overall I like this beer a lot, but I might actually be more partial to the Rochefort 8 because there isnt as much of a bite to it.

Excellent Trappist. Black as night, with complex flavors and a strong alcohol presence. One of my favorites and a great winter warmer.

UPDATED: APR 23, 2008 Strong one...Deep emotions, rich flavour. So, this beer is the best trappist what ive ever had( until now, because ive tasted a Westvleteren12 (08.04.22.)). Fruity with a full body, roasted malt aftertaste, hidden alcohol. Thank you, monks!

Pours very dark brown with a large foamy tan head. Aroma is on the light side with notes of burnt brown sugar, caramel, candied plums, and a bit of alcohol. Flavor is also a bit lighter than expected. Very similar to the aroma, but everything seems a bit muted and slightly more alcoholic than the aroma suggests. Palate is medium, lightly bitter, and a little hot. This reminds of Orval, but only becuase it seems quite overrated. Not bad, but just not that great, and a bit over-priced.
