This beer, the oldest of the three Rochefort Trappist beers, has the reddish colour of autumn leaves, a soft body and an earthy, herbal palate (a hint of Darjeeling tea), which develops into a deep fruitiness.

Fruity but dry: raisin, herbs. Quite lively carbonation. Its really what one would expect of the youngest sibling of the Rochefort family.

330ml bottle. Pours a cloudy amber colour with a fair head and reasonable lacing. The aroma is malt, banana, caramel. The taste is medium sweet with a grassy and peppery finish.

Hazy dark copper with lasting cap of off-white foam, looks as good as Im hoping. Aroma is malt-forward with just a hint of spice and Belgian yeast influence. Rich malty flavors of molasses bread and mellow sweetness of dark fruits thats just so another-level better than any of the best dubbels Ive ever had. Silky smooth and no hint of booze, easily my favorite of the style.

Pours with a huge head with great lacing - marvellous appearance. Aromas are predominantly floral with fruity tones, very nice. What this beer excels in is in the flavour profile: earthy, but not musty, rich herbal, dry, beautiful flavours... but alcohol is fairly present and ends up being a bit drilling after a while. However, even then it still is very good. Nice medium body with just the right amount of hoppiness; oily texture, clear finish. Thumbs up.

Bottle @ The Capital. Medium brown, reasonable head, matching glass is nice. Mild leafy caramel aroma. Earthy marzipan caramel flavour. Sharp with spicy caramel aftertaste. Not really my thing.

0,33l bottle. Hazy hazelnut-brown colour with long lasting small creamy beige head. The center of the goblet was bubbling all along. Aroma: Caramel, wine, matured cheese. Taste: Sweet rich malty/grainy start with a soft bitter mouthfeel with a light tarty tone. Has a cognac-like caracter with a noticable alcohol presence. Has a very creamy texture. (with a flourish/dough taste) Medium body with soft carbonation. Long lightly dry bitter/sweet finish.

Without any surprise, this is a lovely one. I only experienced the 10 one before and had high expectations for the two others and I wasnt disappointed. Very smooth, almost creamy, rather low alcohol level for a trappist beer but a great and easily distinguishable oak aroma. Almost on the same level with the 8 one I tried just after, a great combination with the whole Rochefort set. Maybe lacks a deeper aftertaste, found in the 8 one and even deeper in the 10. Obviously APPROVED BY TAVERNYS BLACK METAL CREW!

Bottle. Color: Reddish brown. Dense off white head. Taste: Medium sweet ripe red fruits, hints of yeast and sugar and notes of caramel and almond. Pretty much carbonation. Overall a nice fruity beer to enjoy.
